Hello,
I'm 18 and just started taking birth control pills two months ago and I was curious if anyone has had any bad reactions to birth control pills? I started taking them b/c I've always had irregular periods and I couldn't stand it any longer. For the last month I've had frequent urination and extreme nausea. I can't go two hours without having to go the restroom, which makes getting a good night's sleep seeming difficult. I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem? I have several other health problems, but I'm not sure if that's what's causing this. Or could it be that the birth control pills are causing a bad drug reaction to one of my other meds? Please reply.

Nausea is a common side effect, and many women claim that they urinate more often. To avoid the nausea, take the pill with food or at bedtime.

I've been on Ovcon-35 for 5 months. I've noticed recently that I have to urinate more when I'm taking the hormone pills.

I started getting dizzy a week after starting zovia 1/35 - I was really dizzy until I stopped taking it.

Here's a list of pills that I've been on in the past and side effects I've experienced from them (keep in mind, you may not experience the same ones, or any for that matter):
Ortho Novum 7/7/7 - severe dizziness, bleeding for a month
Estrostep - A lot of hair loss, weight gain (subsided after 5 months), depression every month during the week before my period. I didn't have this nor the hair loss before going on this pill, terrible pill, I don't recommend it.
Desogen - No sex drive at all
Lo/Ovral - depression
Ovcon 35 - 1st time taken (four months): depression, slight rash on face, bigger breasts ;) , and shorter periods. 2nd time taken (currently taking, five months): slight rash on face (subsided after a couple months), slightly bigger breasts, sensitivity to caffeine, slight appetite increase, slight weight gain of 5 lbs., mostly in the right places. The key word with this one is 'slight'. Great pill for the most part.
Hope I was helpful. :)

Also, I had nausea and vomiting with Ortho Novum 7/7/7. It was probably due to the dizziness side effect, though.

I was only on it for a month. I was really dizzy a lot at various times throughout the month and I bled for the entire month. Neither the dizziness nor the bleeding went away and I couldn't stand it any longer, so I went off them.

I'm currently on Estrostep now & all the things you menitoned I also have. I never thought a bcp could affect hair loss, but alot of hair comes out when I comb my hair. & i thought i was hallucinating when exactly a wk before my period i would get wicked mood swings & just be miserable.
I might have to get my doc to change or go completely off - all these side effects are so annoying.

It's probably a good idea to switch to something else. From what I've read the ones high in androgens cause the hair loss. I've read alesse is another bad one for it. The hair loss, for me, never really went away after I went off of it (estrostep). It did slow down, but my hair is nowhere near as thick as it used to be. I was on them for almost two years before I started to notice it getting thinner as my hair was very thick before. Good luck.

Thanks for your run down of side effects on all those pills Kittywitty! Now I know what to stay away from! Just about everything. Well for me, it was weight gain (thickness in the waist) breast increase, and a terrible time losing weight, anger management problems, depression, terrible PMS and an over active appetite. It just really sucks that it works so well to NOT get you pregnant but just totally screws with everything else!

You're quite welcome, glad I helped. I don't think that they're all bad, though, you just have to go through a lot of trial and error to find the right one like I did. Best advice is to research, research, research before taking any kind of medication.

I'm taking a generic (Low-Ogestrel). The side effects I've experienced have been:
- Something similar to a period for the entire first month.
- Significant weight gain due to water retention.
- Nausea for the first few weeks, but if I took it in the evening I would be fine because I'd sleep through the nauseaus part.
- Occassional lack of a period during the placebo week.
All of these are common and most generally not a sign of a problem. Your pills should have come with an info sheet telling you what to expect.
Low dose pills, like what I'm taking, are good because of the lesser side effects and mess with your natural hormones less too.

How annoying it is to have to go pee all the time!! I am on Yasmin, and I have to pee constantly!! My doctor said it was a common side effect considering Yasmin contains a diuretic. I am switching to Marvelon, hopefully that helps! The only time i've felt nausia was when i missed a pill and took two at once... that was horrible!! Nausia is a very common side effect, i think sometimes it goes away after a month or two (if its bareable) or you may have to try a different bcp. GOOD LUCK!!
