i had a cracked filling repaired but kept playing upie was intermitently sore on pressure. had it xrayed and discovered tooth had abcessed. wasnt painful but started root canal treatment on monday. since then pain has started and hugely increased despite starting amoxocillin on friday. painkillers dont touch it and started augmentin today. couldnt sleep last night and woke up today with swollen face which has increased.
why would this pain start now when it was fine before..shoudl i carry on with the root canal or does the tooth need to come out..dentist thinks the infection might have gone into the bone. while she was doing the first appt i could smell a rotten smell.
it hurts 24/7 and i have a high pain threshold normally.
please help i am getting desparate

hello,

In my opinion i would just have the tooth removed, i had bad infections with one tooth that went into the bone so they said, well after over a yr of the worst pain in my life and three surgery's i just went to an out of town dentist and had the tooth removed. I understand your pain and saving that tooth is not worth it, trust me.....good luck

If the infection has spread to the surrounding bone, you will be in pain until the antibiotics get the infection under control. It is usually 24-48 hours after you begin the course of antibiotics before you notice some relief. If the decay (resulting from the cracked filling) reached the nerve of the tooth, then the gases that these bacteria produce as the live and grow could escape from the hole in your tooth. When this hole is plugged up (with a new filling), then the gases from the bacterial growth creates pressure inside the tooth. The result is the pain you experienced when there was no pain before. The problem was there before, you just didn't know it. My guess is that by the time you get back to this board, your pain will be under control. There is no reason (barring unusual circumstances - and pain is not an unusual circunstance) why having the root canal performed on the tooth followed by a crown will not restore you to proper and comfortable function. Taking a tooth out just because you are experiencing acute infection and pain is not appropriate or in your best interest.

Did you go back to your dentist? Are you seeing a general dentist for the problem or an endodontist? Which ever one, you should tell them abut the problem and ask if a stronger antibiotic is warranted or opening the tooth up to allow it to drain would be appropriate.
