This is one of the most depressing mornings i have had. I woke up, took a shower, and watched the hair on my head just flow down the drain. Then I got out of the shower, ran my hand through my hair, and chunks came out. If any of you are just now starting this, please try and get help or else say goodbye to your beautful locks. My once full head of beautiful is now clogging up the drain... :( God bless everyone, if anyone can relate or needs someone to talk to, Im here.

I'm new to this thread, so I don't know anyone's story here....but..

I was anorexic for a number of years, but have since "recovered" (as much as someone can "recover" from an ED - meaning, it still consumes me, but I don't starve myself and it doesn't completely consume me). I also lost a lot of my hair, and even started to grow hair on my face! Once I began eating again, my hair did grow back and the hair on my face went away...so you can have your beautiful locks back, but you need to eat to provide your body with nutrients - which I know is easier said than done.... ;)

Thanks so much for ur reply. its nice to knwo that i am not alone, and so far i have been really proud of the way i have been eating and not feeling bad or guilty about it. My mom just came upstairs and says how im scaring her with my thinness and im starting to realize she is right. I am getting sick and i need to stop. All the medical stuff seems to be hitting me right now and its time to let go of this stupid thing. I am getting blood work monday so i will see if i havent done too mcuh damage already. Thanks again for u reply and welcome to the boards!

I too have experienced sigificant hair loss fom my ed. Here is what the dermatologist explained to me. When your body is nutrient deprived, the most important organs in your body will get what ever nutrients there are, such as heart, lungs, liver, etc. None will go to your hair, because hair is not a vital organ, thus it will thin or fall out. When I was younger I seemed to be able to get away with my ed, because no one could tell. I had a beautiful body, gorgeous hair, etc. Not so anymore. I would try some easy steps that might encourage you to get better. 1) Eat yougurt 3 times a day, take 2500 mgs of the vitamin Biotin morning and night, and use Nioxin shampoo and conditioner (you can get it at most hair salons) After 6 months you will see improvement and maybe that will encourage you to add more healthy regimens to your life. Take it slow with baby steps. :) :)

Is there anything specific that you should do to avoid hair loss, besides general vitamins and eating?

I'd say don't let your diet become deficient in protein. Hair is mostly protein, and it's important to have enough of it in your diet. Protein shakes are good if you don't eat meat. Also, some medications like anti-depressants can cause hair loss. Another tip is use a comb on wet hair instead of a brush, because hair is more fragile when it's wet.
