my now 4 mo old daughter is STILL constipated. I have had this problem for 3 months now, have tried everything from switching formulas, to karo syrup in every bottle, and now to fruit! The Alimentum hypoallergenic formula didnt even help because she refused to drink it! It smells and tastes awful I guess I cant blame her!!
Now she is on applesauce, which my doctor said can go either way (depending on the child) , any other ideas? She struggles so bad and it makes her get these awful cramps.....has anyone tried something that they found worked really well besides what Ive already tried?!?!

Applesauce is usually considered constipating so I would consider something else. Have you tried prunes or putting prune juice in a bottle for her. Also I would consider sticking with the karo syrup in the bottle to give it time to work.

Have you tried diluted, luke warm prune juice?

Hello, Is the formula low-iron? Iron can really add to and even be the cause of constipation problems. Also, how often are you feeding your baby? (4 Months old, right?) Ask your ped. about this. Besure to bring along the formula and vitamins that you're giving your infant, so he can make sure the baby isn't getting too much iron. We've always used low-iron, premixed, Enfamil without any problems.

She is on a soy based formula,(Isomil) after being switched to a low iron Enfamil that did no good. She did well on the Soy for a while, but then i started in again. And with the Applesauce, it makes her go about 2 or 3 times a day, but its hard http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/frown.gif Applesauce is like Pedialite (you can give it to your child for dehydration of you can use it if they have diarreah) Applesauce could constipate or do the opposite.I guess it depends on the child.
I havent tried Prunes yet, I want to make sure shes going to have no reaction to the Applesauce before trying anything new.
As for the Karo, shes been on it for more than a month, and it hasnt even come close to helping her.

You should be very careful about giving your daughter laxatives and especially at the age of 2.5 yrs old. It is just that laxative use causes dependence and you may find that the more you use it, your daughter will then not be able to have a BM without its use.

No one here has mentioned mineral oil. I dont know how safe it is for infants, so perhaps you may ask your ped. My ped just recommended this 2 tsp per day for my 3 year old who holds his poop in because it is too hard to pass, even though he eats prunes, apricots, oatmeal, you name it. I may start a new thread on mineral oil moms.

Yes, she was 5 weeks preemie.
I also heard laxatives arent good as they become dependant on them.
Mineral OIL? YUCK
Shes all good now though, after feeding her fruits and veggies she goes like HUGE 2-3 times a day...woohoo
She has been in GREAT moods since shes been able to go regularly!
