I was on vacation last week in Florida when I experienced the worst pain I ever felt in my life. I went to the Emergency room and they did a CT Scan that showed a 5 MM stone blocking the exit from my Kidney. They gave me some pain meds and sent me on my way. 7 Hours later the pain was completely gone like nothing had happened. I was straining my urine but never saw a stone. Does any one know what this means? I know nothing about Kidney Stones.
Could the stone just have moved back up into my kidney? Or does a stone move down into your bladder and no longer cause any pain until you pee it out? Can it sit in your bladder for such a long time? Its been over a week now and I have never felt any pain since. Its like nothing ever happened. I am just confused and don't really understand the process you go though in passing a stone.

Hi Winterwolfes,
Most likely with a 5mm stone, it will not pass, I had a 6mm stone blasted a couple of weeks ago, my urologist told me that anything over 4mm will not pass and if it does you will end up in the hospital with the thing stuck in your ureter.
The reason the pain went away is because it could have moved from the area of the exit from the kidney down to the ureter. If this stone has moved down any, you would have known.
I would call a urologist or a nephrologist and have this looked at, this is something that is not fun or funny.
You may need to have lithotripsy, which is not surgery it is a procedure where they laser the stones. If you look on the web you will find lots of info on lithotripsy and kidney stones. And if you find what kind of stones they are, which Calcium Oxalate are the more common one, which I have, you will need to follow a diet. You wouldn't be able to eat spinach, chocolate, tea, coffee, nuts, beans, rhubarb, the list goes on which you can find on the internet also.
I hope you have luck with all of this. If you have any questions please feel free to ask us here, that is what we are here for.

Hi JC
Thanks for you answer. Much appreciated. I really did not know what to expect with this. It was confusing when the pain disappeared and I did not pass the stone. I have an appointment next week for an IVP. Then I am meeting with a urologist a couple of days later. Apparently stones run in my family. My father did not experience problems until his mid 40s. Though, his father started when he was my age (30) and passed a couple of stones almost every year.

Was hit real bad by the pain again Sunday. I was laid out on my living room floor for 3 hours before I called my wife who was at her parents house visiting and told her to come home and take me to the hospital. I took a percocet and it did nothing to ease the pain! I was in agony. 20 minutes last as she pulled into our driveway... poof!... the pain disappeared.
It lasted 3 hours and was just as horrible as it was the first time it hit 2 weeks ago and in the same place which makes me think the stone isn't going anywhere and is too big to pass. I can't live like this! Anyway, I am going in for an IVP tomorrow. Then I have to wait all the way until next Monday to see my urologist! Hopefully between now and then I won't get attacked again.

It can take a while for the stone to actually pass, it could be that it's moved from your kidney into your bladder & is floating around in there.
Can't stress to you enough how important it is to drink water, lots & lots of it. I've had 50+ kidney stones in my short life (I'm 34!) managed to pass most of them without medical intervention - apart from being hospitalised for pain releif each time. But as soon as I start to get lower back pain I uptake my water intake to about 4 litres a day, I'm such a pro at it now I can feel my stones moving down my tubes.
Some of my stones have been tiny, 2-3mm, others have been much larger, 8-9mm however even some of the large ones I've passed on my own.
DRINK DRINK DRINK - And i know the pain sucks, it's just the worst ever, but once the stone is out then it disappears! Until, in my case the next one comes along 3 months later!
Good Luck
