Hi this is my first time on this Childrens Board. I have a baby girl that 3.5 weeks and since week about 3 she cries and wails for a couple of hours for no reason. I think its gas b/c I can hear her gas in her stomach and she farts(excuse me) sometimes. I can tell she is uncomfortable but there are moments when she feels fine. She is only like this during the day and during the nites she sleeps pretty much 3-4 hours w/o waking. We went to the mall yesterday and soon as we got there she started crying a little and then more and then more and finally we had to leave b/c she was unconsolable. Does any one know what I am talking about? I just don't want her to be in any kind of pain b/c it would just kill me. How do you know? I went to the dx when this started and he thinks its lactose intolerance so we changed the formula to Enfamil-Lacto/Free with iron. It has helped a bit but she is still fussy.
Anyone with any answers please help me,
Thank you in advance,
Serena

My Dear Serena,
I have 6 children, And I do knw what you are talking about. 2 of my children were like that.
My son (who is now 12) could not drink anything but goats milk. We tried Everything, I mean Everything. Thankful now he can drink reg milk. But it might take time to figure out what she can handle. Until then, when she is like that, hold her in the football hold. With her belly on your forarm. This might help, plus you can lay her on her back and rotate her legs to her tummy to help get the gas out.
You will have to try diff things till you see what works for her.
There are also gas drops/ gas pills that works well, I started my babies on the when they where a month old. There are all diff kinds.
I just thought of something, it could also be the Iron. My 3 of mine could not take the iron.
I hope this helps, if you need anything just let me know, If I cant help, hopefully someone else will be able to help.
Take care and Deep breath http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif

Dear Chele,
Thanks so much for your words. I just had a mild breakdown just a few minutes ago. I just have to be patient and I think I may need to drop her off at daycare or with a family member for 1 or 2 days of the week before I go crazy.
Anyone else with any help?

Hi Serena,
I too went through the wailing from H E (double hockey sticks) for quite some time with my first born.
I was told to try Mylocin drops.
AHHHHHHHH!! what a relief
another suggestion which also helped my daughter during teething & then for my second child ( a boy) during "colicky" moments is a wonderful homeopathic pill called "Humphrey's."
I do wish you luck.
Being a Mom is hard enough.
Take care & know that you are not alone.

Hi,
My daughter (12 now) had colic and I am just going to talk to you a little about what I did to remedy it (temporarily). (Everything is going to sound "weird" but I promise on my life it worked for some reason for me.
1)I did laundry and set her in her carrier on the dryer (while it ran)
2)Ran the vaccum sweeper
3)Took her for a ride in the car
4)Put her over my knee and rocked her side to side and patted (don't know if that is really a word LOL) her bottom hard enough to move any bubbles (like patting her back after she ate)
I don't remember any other tricks that I had it may be personal for the child. But I just payed attention to when I was doing something and she would get quiet. And (not being funny either) but when I had nothing left to clean or nothing left to wash or when nothing worked, I relied on something her doctor told me babies get stressed too just like us, and sometimes you just have to let them let off steam.
I know it is heart wrenching because it seems like they are in discomfort but BELIEVE ME it does go away. And when it does it will truly be only a memory.
Hope things get better.

Oh one more thing....
When I blow dryed my hair, I had her in the bathroom with me (if it was a fussy time).
I don't know why that hum works but something about it worked.
GOOD LUCK and just love her, look at her and how beautiful she is too you and just tune out the screams.

my son is now 4 and we went through almost the same thing when he was a baby. he would vomit all the time and cry for hours on end. after 3 emergency room visits, countless doctor appointments and MANY sleepless nights, we tried a hypoalergenic formula called Nutramigen. there is also one called alimentum, they are the same thing. the milk protein is broken down and after 1 day on the new formula he was 100% better. I just wished we had known about it sooner. he was nearly 4 months old when his pediatrician recommended it. GOOD LUCK

My daughter, now 5 mo. old had colic, she cried from about 6-8pm every night. Mylecon drops worked wonders most of the time!! It was winter, so i always made sure her face was covered if i had to take her somewhere, because gulping cool air can cause gas, and I also made sure her bottle was warm, because if her formula is cool, that could also cause it , unless shes used to it cool, or you nurse.
My dad would have to hold her in whats called a "football" hold. Where he held her on her belly rested on his forearm, that helped calm her alot.
Also, I read somewher eonline, that if you do a bicycle motion with that baby's legs while she has the gas and if you rub her belly from left to right on a circular motion it helps move the bubbles out.
I also lay'd her on my waterbed alot on her belly (while i was right there of course) and the heat helped. It always helps to switch hands too....maybe your hubby or someone else can take the baby for a while, i know my nerves got kind of jangled, not on purpose, but a constant crying baby will do that to ya....so its always good to hand the baby over for a while if you are able to.
Good Luck, and it WILL pass. They say it can last until the baby is 12-14 weeks old. I remember counting the weeks, but it will end, I PROMISE!!!!

i have had 4 children and thank god only one had colic and thank god she was a first child!!
and i think only moms who went thru what you will be going really feel for you, my daughter started around 8-9 until 1-2 am everynight
mylocon didn't work for my daughter, althou i am not saying it won't work for yours ,
we did the car seat on top of the washer on spin cycle
car rides at 1 am
swaddling, bathing,singing nothing worked,
i just ended up crying with her almost everynight while my husband slept on the couch
but at three mths she just stopped crying
just remember it will pass,,you have a precious baby ,
if you think she is gassy try layingn her on her back and pushing her knees up to her chest , you can do it both at the same time or one leg at a time and any gas in her belly should get expelled,,
good luck and remember to take deep breathes and be patient,,

I would recommend everything everyone else has said regarding the belly rubbing and lying her on her belly and having her in a football hold.
Also, the other poster that mentioned the homeopathic remedy, well, from what you say, the most appropriate homeopathic remedy here would be CHAMOMILLA. Chamomilla is a brilliant remedy for colic and especially when she is inconsolable and nothing will settle her down at all. I think this remedy should work very well, but if not, then COLOCYNTH is another remedy that is good for colic. This is better if she gets very red in the face and is angry too, but with the inconsolable bit, then CHAMOMILLA would be the best one.
You can get these from any healthfood store in a 6 or 30x potency and you just let one dissolve in her mouth. Homeopathic remedies are safe to be given to babies and children, so don't worry about anything like that.
Good luck

i have a 4wk old and she also cries during the day and rests well at night-i couldn't take it anymore and finally got her to a pediatrician who diagnosed her as having acid reflux-she was put on zantac and i also add cereal to her bottle to make it heavy enough for her to keep down-does your baby spit up-this medicine has made a big difference-she isn't 100% better but it has made a huge difference
