Need some advice on how to handle my "nerves" when going to the doctor  Even when taking my BP I do tend to tense up a bit and it shows a bit higher than normal
And with us girls, what really makes me more "nervous" are our annual exams (sorry tmi)...
How do you guys stay calm? I try to breath but my nerves just tense up at that moment

Hallo,
I hear you on what you are saying about the doctor visits - I know this so well + I suffer from the startle reflex at almost any doctorīs office.
My piece of advice is: find doctors who will be nice to you. People who you will like to meet. If somebody is not understanding or is cross with you when you come there, donīt go away - RUN AWAY. It is important to eliminate the stress connected with all the examinations as much as possible.
Talk to your doctors. Tell them that you need them to speak soft to you and maybe chat a little bit before the examination about some "normal" things - family, fashion, boys... I donīt know, you come with your own ideas.
Concentrate on slow deep breathing. This can take your attention much away from the fear of the coming examination, but you have to ask the doctor then to talk to you very quietly, otherwise it will disturb you and you will tense up again.
Hope this helps a little.

I second much of what Alinka says. As someone who is going to the doctor much more than I would like right now, I understand what you are going through. I find it helpful to write a list of "talking points" the night before my exam. That way, I won't forget anything important that I want to ask. As for blood pressure, mine's always high during the exam too. It's called "white coat syndrome". Ask them to take it at the end of the visit-- it should have come down by then.

Yeah, I make lists when I go to the doctor...sometimes I don't...but if I have a lot of questions, or something...I make a list, if I think I'm gonna forget anything!
