After having a bout with depression my BM havn't been normal. I started taking Citricel twice a day after viewing this board. Today my first bm was hard to get out and golf ball in nature. The second was an hour later and was double the size and eaiser to move. After lunch another was double in size and eaiser than the last to move. I don't feel like I'm emptying the bowel ?? Help..
Should I try psyllium fiber or something different??

This type fiber works well!! I think the type stool you are having means you are not drinking enough water when you take the fiber??

Citrucel causes less gas than psyllium but I have been using psyllium for about 23 years and it's cheaper--- I use the Wal Mart Equate Brand and it cost about half as much as Citrucel or Metamucil. I like Equate because it seems a little courser and the dose is about half again larger.

Thanks Harry,
When I drink a bunch a water it seems like I just pee it out but I'll try. I read in the archives how you achived a complete BM in the morning, will you give the rundown again?
Also, I've heard of Magnesium supplements from the health food stores being of some value. Are these safe to take everyday? I did try 200mg. caplets of Mag.Citrate and it seemed like taking a laxative. However, the FDA intake number is around 800 mg. mixed with calcuim I think.
Please shed some light on the Magnesium issue if you have any insight???
Thanks so much..

Yes, you will pee a lot of the water out, but that just means you are getting more than enough water. More than enough is better than not enough in this situation. When you take the fiber you really must make sure you drink a lot of water with it.

I still had the same problem today, the first urge was difficult to pass small and hard. On the third try in 2 hour period I finally got a somewhat normal stool. I've been on the Fiber for over a week and this has been the pattern. I take a fiber drink in the morning and usually eat rasin bran for breakfast.

Has anyone tried any other health food store products for bulking and ease of passage? I know some are really laxatives so one must be careful. Has anyone tried a colon cleanse and probiotics?

Alien,
A person needs 25 to 35 grams of fiber daily to make their intestines function properly. And, it needs to be divided between soluble and insoluble fiber.

Everybody's diet is different so you have to adjust the amount of water soluble fiber you intake daily to have a normal comlete BM--- regularly w/o straining.

I take Psyllium twice daily and that amounts to about 7 grams using Equate from Wal Mart. I also eat yogurt that contain inulin --the same that is in Fiber Choice-- and I eat veggies and fruit daily and I drink beween 6 and 6 glasses of water.

Magnesium is a mineral that is in every cell of your body and 67% of it is in your bones. It is needed for alot of functions including calcium absorption and enzyme production.
The daily recommended amount is 400mgms and with that amount it should not cause and bowel effects. I take only 200gms daily and I take it in divided doses.

As you know there are many laxatives that contain Magnesium-- like Milk of Magnesia, Magnesia Citrate and Epson Salts as well as others but they are in higher doses for use as a laxative.

There is a good site about the Miracle of Magnesium that is worth reading:

Harry,
I assume the insouble fiber consumed is through friuts, veggies and yogurt.
Apples, banana, grapes, steamed veggies, right?

The souble is adjusted by the amount of citracel I consume and I need to find the balance.

What form of Magnesium do you use? aspartate, citrate? With or without calcium?

If I could tap your knowlege once more I should be on my way to healthy BM's. Much thanks..

Thanks for the Magnesium link it was very informative...

Hi AB,
You are right about the insoluble fiber -- include green leafy veggies.

The soluble fiber is all grains that absorb fluid like rice, oatmeal, corn w/o husk(grits), cream of wheat, etc--- beans & peas like lima, red, pinto, blackeye peas, greeen peas, etc and most all root veggies like potatoes, carrots, turnips, beets.

I like chelated minerals best that are made by Albion Labs and sold to the retail makers of minerals--- they are attached to a protein amino acid that is readily absorbed but the others work well also. You can read about albionlabs.com on their site.

I don't take calcium supplements often but sometmes my blood tests indicates I need to -- so I take it!!

If you are a female you need it and also vitamin D to prevent osteoporsis. The process begins in the early thirties not after menopause like many think--- bones are constantly being replaced. If you don't intake enough calcium for all your organs to function properly then your body gets it from your bones -- your entire life after 25 yo.

I wish you well---Harry
