I came across this board and would like some help, if possible...my 8 month old daughter involuntarily shakes her head as if in a "no" fashion several times a day, but usually when tired. I know it's involuntarily because it just doesn't look normal...my husband and i are both concerned...has anyone heard of this or experienced it with their infants??
Thanks,
Jennifer

I would call the doctor as soon as possible. They couldbe mini siezures. She would need to have testing done. I am not trying to scare you but that needs to be taken serious.

Please see my reply to
12 YR OLD STILL HAS TICS
below about 6 posts.
My daughter did what you are describing at about 10 months old. The previous response is correct it could be a seizure, but just a possibly may not be. My best advice is to video tape as many as you can before you see the doctor. It was what actually determined my daughters diagnosis.
Good luck.

Help... my daughter is 8 months old today and has been doing the "head shaking" thing for the last few days and its frequenct is increasing. It is definitely not intentional and is not normal looking.... please someone tell me what I need to do... who do I call... who should she be seen by... what is this? is she ok or is this the beginning of something really scarey???? I am so incredibly worried and sad right now... anyone- please help.

Dear Mom2,
My son would occasionally shudder since birth. Began "staring off" and mumbling around 10 months. Sometimes hand would shake. Local ped. neurologist said "he didn't know" what it was, ped. neurologist at Mayo Clinic in Rochester said possible tic disorder. I strongly suggest having an EEG to rule out seizures. If no seizures, you can go from there. I know how you are worrying. Many children outgrow seizures and tics - educate yourself and you will find some relief from your fear. Good luck.

Hello everyone. My daughter is two months old today, and she has done that head shaking thing too. I'm not sure if you all mean fast or slow shaking, but her's is a quick little shake, and she is normally staring at something when she does it, but it too seems involuntary. I thought that it was just a nervous system thing because sometimes she shakes her head a little in the same way when she is trying to latch on and breastfeed. There doesn't seem to be a specific time when she does it, and I don't recall her doing it THAT often, just often enough for me to remember.
Maybe I'll ask her doctor about it at her appointment Friday.

platinum.....what you described to me sounds like rooting (when the baby is "rooting" to find the nipple to eat) my daughter used to do this too and it is not a cause for concern, and it is involuntary because it is a reflex, eventually she will outgrow this.
now about the other posters that sounds a little different because the babies are older and would have outgrown the reflex and probably needs checked out by a dr.
but again what you described is very normal

im not verygood wi computers. did hartjen get my reply? can anyone else help me? i think, an hope, the shaking head thing is rooting and tiredness, my 7month wee boy does it. however, recently he has rolled his eyes upwards and fixed them with pupils dilated for no more than 4 seconds. an eeg has shown good clear results, he is a otherwise a healthy, robust, happy wee boy. the neurologist just told me to keep monitoring him. i am still so worried. are these things very common???

Hello,
I have read everyone's postings, and I am also a concerned mom of a 8 month old who displays some of the same symptoms. She does the full body shiver several times throughout the day, and will shake her head, most often when she is very tired and having a bottle. I have been told not to worry, and that this is something she will out grow. We are seeing the doctor next week, and I will have plenty of questions.
Has anyone heard of Infant Shudder Syndrome? In doing some research on the web, this daignosis covererd about all my daughters symptoms. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
