I'm 43 and optician tested my eyes and said I need to wear glasses +.75 power in both eyes for near vision and reading.Distance vision is perfect. He also says I need to wear the glasses always and suggested progressives - Is there any way I can manage without the glasses, I don't read or work on the computer a lot, more of outdoor work, and are there any excercises, diet etc which can help reduce the power -

It sounds like he is prescribing reading glasses. Why would you need to wear them all the time if your distance vision is perfect? IF they are just for close-up like reading, computer, etc. this is normal part of aging. Sorry. The eyes' lens sort of changes after the age of 40 and this is why a lot of people end up with reading glasses. It's normal, natural, happens to most people. I don't think there is any way to reduce it.
.75+ power is minimal. I think I use either a 2.5 or 3.0+ reading lens.
You may want to ask your dr about when you're supposed to wear them, as it wouldn't make sense to wear them for distance. if they are for close-up things.

Tks , what he's prescribing is a progressive lens, something like the old bifocal where the top portion of the glass is plain and the lower half has power and says I shud wear them all the time. I'd like to know if the power will keep increasing with age, and if there's anyway it can be kept under control.I hv no problems reading newspapers etc and don't want to wear glasses even later on

HI, well not really sure on that one. If you don't want to wear glasses all the time, which I certainly can't blame you for, why not just reading glasses, that you can wear when you need them? It is a pain taking them on & off all day, and it may have something to do with your work, where you'd need close-up & far vision changes quite often. Wearing them all the time would make sense in that it would be easier.
I'm not sure whether the eyes would become weaker over time. It's possible, but not definte...I think everyone is different in that respect. Did you ask the dr that question? If they did get worse, it would probably be a gradual thing, over several years. Of course with age, lots of things change and eyes can develop all kinds of problems. There are some commercial vitamins out there for eye health, if you want to go that route. I don't think they would cause any harm, although I think they are more for the internal structure of the eye(i.e. the macula). I have had lot's of eye surgeries in the past 19 yrs and I am still wearing the same pair of glasses that I got
probably 15 yrs ago. They're still good enough for everyday, and the changes have been minimal, so I haven't bothered getting newer ones. That's 15 yrs so.... but like I said, everyone is different.
Good Luck.
