Michelle, This is in response to our last posts about services. It seems with your sons dx that he should qualify for more services than he is getting. I remember from a prior post of yours that you said you were still waiting for his written evaluation. Have you received this yet? If not, this is the tool to getting more services based on the recommendation of the dr. doing the eval.
Kolby should be getting ABA services whether it be in your home or in school which addresses many issues including food issues. How old is Kolby? Is he already three?

Kolby is now 3 1/2 turning 4 in December of this year. In March he just had his 3 year evaluation done and was diagnoised then. Prior to that (his 3 or so hours of therapy) were only based on a speech delay and sensory intergration dysfunction. Since now he has been dx with autism they put him in a class. In fact his first day was today. OMG how hard it was to leave him. I handed him over to the teacher and he covered his eyes. I had to walk away while he cried. I got home, called the teach and she said he was fine. That made me feel better. And OMG was he the dearest little guy when I went to pick him up. He had this big back pack strapped on him and he was walking out of the school like a big proud little man. He thought he was going on the bus and was all ready to do so. He saw me and broke from the line and gave me a hug. But quickly wanted to get back in line to take the bus. I told him next week he would start taking the bus. Well that eliminated my fear about his fear of the bus. Perfect day!!!!
I think things went well today and he even tried to tell me what he played with at the school. Now Kolby doesn't make conversation but it seemed like he was trying. When I asked him what he played with at school he said "Played numbers". Like your son he loves the numbers. They have the foam ones there that he has played with before. So maybe he was trying to tell me where he was cause he thought I didn't know.
Now back to therapy....I knew in my heart that he was autistic the summer of 2004. But when they came to the house to test him, he passed their test.
He did show lots of signs of sid so they have been treating him for that. It saddens me that this all takes so long because Kolby should have had his 3 year evaluation back in December. He would have been placed in this class since then and would have been further along. But it is what it is now.
When your son turns 3, will he have to be evaluated again and be switched to a different program? Under 3 in my area is called early intervention.

Michelle, I'm so glad for you and Kolby that things went well for him today. I will keep my fingers crossed that it continues to go smoothly.
My son is in Early Intervention Program now with a seperate ABA program from an outside company most of which happens in my home. The school system will be coming in to evaluate him shortly for placement in their Special Needs Program. I have heard what a struggle it can be to get the recommended services as the school system basically tries to decide what they think the child needs. I'm preparing for the battle since I want what his developmental pediatrician is recommending for him. Bottom line is I want as much as I can get while he is still young and more easily redirected.
Well .... Good luck with school and keep me posted on how he is doing.

Make sure you bring his therapist with you to the eval. They give a lot of input. Write everything down that you want them to know. Like say Jeffrey is having a good day, they may say he is fine. You want them to have all the information. I was lucky and had the best OT ever. She did a lot of talking for me.
Kolby had a great 2nd day of school!!! When we left the school he said "Bye School!" I could eat him up he is so cute! And so brave! I think he is going to be fine. He is playing with the other kids.

Thanks for the advice. I'm so glad to hear things are going well with Kolby. Is he in school part day or full day? Is he in an intergrated class room or is it all PDD kids? You must be on cloud nine that he is adjusting so well. Look out for day three... sometimes this is when it hits them. My daughter was great day 1 and 2 then day three was when the tears came. That was the one and only time she ever cried at school and she was just barely three at the time. I hope it keeps going well.

Oh he cries when I leave but stops shortly after according to the teacher. Sometimes, like others, I feel like he is doing so well that he isn't Autistic. But I know he probably is. Like today when I took my other son to nursery school, Kolby went up to the teacher gave her a hug and kiss. In the past he never even looked at her. What the heck was that about? She was floored.
I keep reading all this stuff about getting rid of toxins and shots did this and I don't know what the heck to think. Do you go through that? I just don't remember Kolby ever loosing stuff he learned. Now mind you I have two older children and they kept me busy. Maybe I just didn't notice. I remember Kolby being a very quiet baby. So much so that one time he was screaming and crying I rushed him to the Doctors. He had a cold. Go figure. I often wonder if it was all the antibiotics he took for ear infections. I wonder if there is just one common thread that links all of our kids? I'd change his food but he doesn't eat many things as is.

I too have days when I just don't think he is Autistic, then I remember that it is a spectrum and he definately meets enough of the criteria to put him on it. In my sons case, I think that the gluten/casien reak havok in his system. He began to improve dramatically after I removed dairy from his diet and continues to improve. If he eats something containing casien it is very apparent in his behaviour.
Prior to removing dairy Jeffrey could have met the dx of classic Autism his symptoms were that severe. Once I removed the dairy and minimized gluten last August he improved rapidly and was dx in March as PDD/NOS which at the pace he is going I think may change to Asperger down the road. His ABA person thought this as well. I feel very lucky to have the child I have today. He is a far cry from my child that sat at the park and played with the wood chips. Today he is one of the gang at the park and gets excited about the other kids where last summer he never noticed them. I thank the Gluten Casien Free diet every day and every parent who ever spread the word about it. It's not something the pediatrician tells you about because " It's not scientifically proven" In any event, it worked for us.

Kolby never sat and played like that. He never spent hours playing with wood chips or even letters. He kind of jumped from one thing to another. He never flicked his fingers or flapped his hands. But I think each child on the spectrum does something different. And maybe he didn't do these things because of the lack of milk. Kolby doesn't like dairy. He doesn't like ice-cream, cheese, milk. He does like yogurt. My Mother-in-law and I were talking this morning about all the food we eat. How those foods could effect our moods and development. I mean look how fat we are in the US. Maybe it is all about the rotten food we eat. Just about my whole family has an issue with milk. Lots of intolerance for it. Who knows maybe the little bit he gets hurts him. Maybe I should cut out all the dairy for while and see what happens. These are the things Kolby eats a lot. Tell me if they are things that are the list to NOT Eat.
Chicken nuggets
Hot dogs
Chips, cheesits, pretzels
Spaghetti O's
apple sauce
Yogurt
Jell-O
Peanut butter
some bread white or wheat
Ham
Cookies
Cup cakes
Waffles
Pickles
Candy
He doesn't really like any chocolate candy.

TRUST me if you try the gluten casien free diet it includes almost every thing except fruits, vegatables and meats and even then you have to watch the seasonings to be sure it doesn't contain gluten or casien ingredients. There are lots of foods out there that are free of these indregients, but you have to constantly check your labels and be sure that new and improved things haven't added it in items that didn't have it before. It's alot of work, but from what I see it's worth it. The diet doesn't work for everyone but I feel like it does for us. There are cookbooks out there that give lots of recipes and tells you what to stock your kitchen with to make this work for you. There are tons of substitutions that can be used for an everyday recipe.

Well since he doesn't eat veggies this should work for him. However, no meat? Chicken is O.K. right?
Kolby took the bus today and did a great job. He likes the bus better than Mommy driving him to school. He is doing so well. I'm glad that your son is doing well too. I just keep kissing and hugging my son because I feel like he is my little joy again. I'm not looking at him like the cranky, moody, unhappy little boy anymore.

That's so good that his mood is happy. I think you misunderstood my post about the diet. Veggies, fruit, and meat are all okay to eat, it just the seasonings and prepared foods you need to check the ingredients. Well talk to you soon.

I forgot to tell you that day three was hard. He cried when we pulled up to the school. But now he is taking a bus so he loves it. He thinks he is cool because he takes the bus. It's not a big bus but he doesn't care. The school is too far for me to drive all week. I didn't want him on the bus but after the first week of driving, I had to.
Kolby hasn't eaten a veggie for about a year now. I tried baby food thinking it was texture, he gaged. Don't know how to get him to eat them. I wonder if the veggie chicken nuggets tast like chicken? Hmm I'll have to buy them.
