About 1 month ago the doc put me on Vytorin 10/20Mg. It has now been 30 days or more and I just recieved my Cardiocheck and I LOVE this machine. Worth every single penny.
Anyway, I will be in the docs office this Tuesday to pick up my actual numbers fromthe lab before the vytorin which I think were:
Total Cholesterol--273
LDL--203
HDL--Not sure
Tryglycerides--Not sure but must have been good as he never mentioned it.
After a little over 30 days on Vytorin my tests on the Cardiopcheck were:
Total Cholesterol--115
LDL--HAVE to calculate but not sure how to {trying to call company}
HDL--45
Tryglycerides--96
I am pleased with all of the above and my LDL must be quit low as well. Once I figure out how to calculate it I will post it [or maybe some of you know?]. Anyway, I might be getting just a wee bit to much of Vytorin and might cut my pill in half.
Any advice?
If any of you get the Cardiocheck you will love it. I love the cappilary tubes as they make collecting the blood sample and applying so much easier :) :) :)
Nice machine, really nice. :)

LDL should be 51--great ratio of HDL/LDL and HDL/Total :)
The Friedwald equation is used to approximate the LDL based on the "average" composition of VLDL (carrier of TG and cholesteryl ester) in most people works out to be ~ 5 mg/dL triglyceride per mg/dL VLDL carrier. As the TG concentration is increased in the plasma, the approximation is less accurate and the cutoff used is 400 mg/dL where the LDL concentration cannot be estimated with a specified accuracy level (offhand, I don't know what that level is).
Your total lipids are the sum of [VLDL]+[LDL]+[HDL], and [VLDL]=[TG/5].
So the the Friedwald eqn is used to calc LDL by LDL = Total - HDL - TG/5
Rearranged that is : Total = LDL + HDL + TG/5.
Many people will assume incorrectly that this equation is some kind of "chemical law" of how the body lipids distribute (like LeChatelier's principle), and that you can perturb one variable independently of others and effect some change. The equation is only valid within specific lipid concentration ranges and even then, the values are approximations with some inherent error.

What did you pay for the machine Stumper, did any test strips come with that price?
Will your doctor confirm your numbers AFTER Vitorin on that next visit. It will be interesting how these compare with the Cardio-Chek numbers.
Why not test the morning you go see the doctor...then you KNOW you're comparing appples to apples.
GREAT numbers, but I'm a bit of a skeptic on that 51 LDL...that's AWFULLY, AWFULLY good, perhaps TOO good...even if Vitorin IS a powerful combination.

Great going stumper. Glad to see things are doing so well and the meds. agree with you. Never heard of that machine, hopefully it compares well to your drs.
Keep up the great work, and also keep us posted how the next test goes......

Lenin,
Yes, for $214.00 which was total including shipping which was free, I recieved a "package" deal. I recieved cardiocheck, a box of 6 cholesterol trips, a box of 6 HDL strips, 25 capilary tubes, 6 glucose strips. THEN I ordered separately 6 triglyceride strips.
Now, as to the doctors numbers , when I called a week ago and requested a cholesterol lab work the nurse told me that the doc did not have me scheduled for that right now, so my guess is that when I go in Tuesday, show him my results he will then send me for lab work and another visit , at which, I will tell him "Scianoro"(sp?) :D . I see no need for another checkup, at least not immediately for at least 6 months. That is why I got the Cardiocheck. :)
I know what you mean by the low LDL. I got ahold of Cardiocheck and they told me how to calculate and then told me numbers were excellent. She asked me if I have done any physical work lately and I have done quite a bit lately, working out on the oil and gas wells with all the nice weather. She said that could be a factor as well.
nontheless, I am happy :)
Lenin, if you could scrape together a few bucks this thing is indeed nice, you would like it. :)

Thanks JJ,
The doc wouldn't order another test for me and I know its just about another visit and money.
I could spit nails.

You are correct. The lady on the phone had LDL at 50.8 to be exact.
Today I celebrated with 2 eggs and a donut. :)
Haven't had those in awhile.

Go for it Stumper :)
After my last stress test, the attending Cardio offered me the left over apple fritter (about 2 x the size of what I would ever eat for breakfast and lunch combined) and I did decline. However, I think your choice was a bit healthier than what I was offered.

Hey guys,
Remember these walking medical corporations HAVE to keep up their buisnesses...I'm surprised you weren't given BIG MAC coupons, WITH a Super-Sized Shake after a blood draw!:D:D
(God, my doctor won't even me a cup of coffee...I bring a thermosful to cure my caffeine withdrawal IMMEDIATELY.)

Stumper,
I had my cholesterol checked at work and they had a cardiocheck and guess what it read 150 total cholesterol but when i went to docs it was over 200. Do you do that cardiocheck on a fast? At work I was not fasting and they said it would be accurate. I'm not sure I put faith in those cardiochecks. I'm anxious to see what your docs readings say..Lisa

Hi Lisa,
From what I read the Cardiocheck was matched against 2 other similar machines along with lab results. The Cardiocheck was the very best and shown "little bias" with the labs results. I think most were within 2%. This is indeed close and might mean just a few points. The other 2 machines shown about a 12% difference.
Having said that I just spoke with a friend of mine today who had total cholesterol levels in the 300's. He goes to the same doc as I and doc put him on Vytorin. His results came in and doc says his cholesterol dropped dramatically and doc was very very pleased with results.
But yes, when I took this test I fasted for about 10 hours and then took it in the morning. I found out the reason my doc will not order another blood check (cholesterol) for me right now is because the insurance company is starting to crack down on doctors ordering to many tests, at least, that is what the receptionist told my wife. So I guess I am stuck right now but I will see the doc this Tuesday.

Lisa,
I also wanted to say that the same morning I took my readings I took my wifes as well. She just had gotten home and had an egg-mcmuffin for breakfast that morning. When she was at the docs office her total cholesterol was 178 the month before. When I took it that moring her readins were:
Total Cholesterol--191
HDL--57
LDL--111 calculated
triglycerides--117
She is diabetic (pills) and these were actually quite good and she takes lipitor. She is now upset some and wants to go on Vytorin as well.
