Have to apologize for saying I took the 400 IU of E. We use to take it and then a lil over a year ago the cardio guy told us not to, as it wasn't all it was cracked up to be...
My girlfriend's dr. took her off of it also, and said what was in a multi vitamin was enough. I was tired last night, and didn't realize what I did or didn't answer. Gosh it is tuff getting old..... :D
As I did say, I am going to switch back to a B-C complex vitamin, as I truly had better numbers, and felt better on them. The C is a big thing for me, has always been. Fish oil I can't take, it raised my LDL too much, so they took me off that. For now I am eating more fish, mostly in the form of tuna, as I am not a big fish eater, never was. Mostly I have increased my fruits and veggies and cut down on red meats, and naturally cut back a lil more on carbs. All meats are either grilled, broiled or baked, and for snacking, usually a small portion of nuts, for those good fats, or a piece of fruit. We were never junk food eaters, so that isn't a problem, just a nice small piece of DARK chocolate every so often. Gosh, got to have a lil fun at my age.. :D
Went for bloodwork this a.m., God willing it will come back ok....

JJ,
I don't know if vitamin E is ALL that it is cracked up to be, but I do know that there have been previous studies which showed a clear benefit in regards to heart disease prevention. The problem is that some of these more recent studies used synthetic vitamin E, as I heard one doctor report recently. If such is the case, then chances are that it was destined to fail right from the start. You want to take vitamin E in its natural form, preferably a full spectrum vitamin E supplement containing both all 4 of the tocopherols and all 4 of the tocotrienols. More expensive? You bet it is, but it may be well worth it. I seriously doubt that any study which portrayed vitamin E as being worthless had ever used a supplement of such high quality.
Another problem with that last vitamin E study was that it included such a high number of people who already had serious health problems. In other words, many of these people already had one foot in the grave. People don't die because of vitamin E. They die in spite of it. In my opinion, this was just another example of a deliberate attempt to discredit vitamin E.

U could be right, I really don't know. Next time hubby goes to the cardio man I am going to ask. We were taking the gel caps, like U said, the synthetic type. It does make U just a lil crazy with all these studies, as God only knows who sponsers them, and just who do U believe....
He didn't say it like it was some sort of emergency, just told us it was no big deal if we took them or not, as studies showed they weren't as good as expected. Like I said, he is super to talk to, so next time I will ask him about the study. I know he told us he went to some convention, first one, and as he said..LAST ONE, and they had some new cholesterol liquid thing out that he wouldn't give to a dog. Guess he said he tried it and it was so horrible tasting, he had to eat something fast to get the taste out of his mouth. Wish I could remember what it was, but my CRS is in full bloom... :D
He is not one to go to these conventions, as he said it is nothing but sales folk trying to push people like himself to push their drugs. Hey, at least he is honest. I'll remember to ask him about the E and whatever the junky stuff was he tasted. Thanx again....

JJ,
Oh, I know what you mean about so many conflicting studies. After a while you don't know what to believe and what not to believe. I guess it's up to us all to just make up our own minds and believe whatever we want. Anyway, it's refreshing to hear that you have an honest doctor who thinks for himself and puts his patients' best interests first.
But back to those vitamin E studies. Maybe it's just me, but I've always gotten the impression that everything negative that comes out about vitamin E is always played up big-time in the media. But any positive findings are either downplayed, kept off the front pages, or else ignored altogether. For example, I suppose the following studies on vitamin E have suddenly become totally irrelevent:
In 1993 the Harvard-based Physicians' Health Study showed that men who take just 100 IU vitamin E daily have nearly half the risk of coronary artery disease as men who get less than 7 IU daily.
In 1993 the Nurses' Health Study showed that women who took vitamin E supplements for two years cut their risk of coronary artery disease in half compared to women who didn't take supplements.
The well-known Cambridge Heart Antioxidant Study (CHAOS) looked at 40,000 men who already had heart disease. The study found that vitamin E kept the disease from getting worse. The men who took at least 400 IU vitamin E a day cut their risk of a nonfatal heart attack by an amazing 77 percent.
In 1996, a study from the University of California School of Medicine showed that taking 100 IU vitamin E a day substantially slowed the progress of coronary artery disease in men who already had it.
By the way, I wish you luck with your latest blood test.

Yup, we have to do our own research and decide things for ourselves, as like U said, it is hard to believe half the things U read about. Still say alot of these studies are done by big companies who might down play things if it isn't making money for them. Thank goodness for the net, where U can go and read and then decide what U want to try, and if it works fine, if not, hey, we tried.
Yes, that is why we like his cardio guy and the group so much, they tell it honest and don't try to shove things on you just to make a buck. I had a dr. who told me unless I took exactly what he wanted, he wouldn't treat me. Needless to say he didn't last long.... :nono: Geez, talk about having a God like attitude huh?
Thanx for the well wishes, but I'm not getting my hopes up, as last time I did, I was very disappointed, but I'll keep on trying till I get it right, or die trying... :D
Take care, and enjoy your evening....

If the negative news articles on vitamins confuse us, they have succeeded in planting seeds of doubt. Even 1 negative news article is enough to raise a red flag. In the past, doctors would always state that "vitamins can't hurt nor do they help". This information has taken a turn for the worst. When I mention vitamins to my doctor he responds by saying:
1) You don't need vitamins.
2) Nothing...has been scientificaly proven in favor of vitamins.
3) Do not waste your money.. on C, Magnesium, E etc.... (You do not have a deficiency).
I'm sorry but he has not convinced me....
My sisters doctor told her to get off of Vitamin E immediately..and give up on any other vitamin she may been taking. They can cause bleeding and med.interractions, and a negative news article was written recently. She should continue on NEXIUM, Aspirin, Lipitor and Corgard indefinitely.
