Hello. I've been having back problems for almost two years now. I'm only 17 going on 18 in a few months. I went to the doctors...they thought it was a lower back strain because i was an athelete. I stopped activities and went to pt for about a month and a half. The pain did get better, but now I can not do things with duration like i used to. My lower back starts hurting when i'm exercising, mainly running. I can not stand for a while or do long distance walking such as in shopping. I took an MRI and it didnt show anything except mild scoliosis which they said practically everyone has and that is not the problem. They basically wrote me off after that. I started seeing a chiropracter several months ago. I've been expecting things to get better as far as my lower back, but things remain the same. I get massage theropy, but things remain the same.
I want some relief because I feel like i'm going crazy and that everyone thinks i'm faking and i just want to prove them wrong...and get relief. Can anyone help me???

Hi Brittybit. It sucks when nobody believes what you say. Mabye some of the veterans here can suggest some other tests available (other than MRI) that may determine what is causing the problems. If it is just muscle strain and you take it easy for awhile, it will get better. However, if it's something more serious, the sooner you get treatment, the better. Be insistant with your doctor that you need help and other tests if nessecary. I'm sorry i don't have any real good advise but i feel for you and hope you have better luck figuring this out from here. Hang in there. :) :)

Britty-
I was in the same boat as yourself. I got kicked out of PT because it threw me into spasms so bad I couldn't walk. MRI showed nothing. A new Ortho doc had a hunch and had it done again, this time with thinner cross sections? He wrote it out as a "Thin Cut MRI" It showed the problem and he sent me to a different PT who had worked with young athletes with similar problems, all is well still, 3 years later with no surgery...

If there is nothing structurally wrong with your back you may have TMS (Tension Myositis Syndrome). For about $10. buy a copy of Dr. John E. Sarno's "Healing Back Pain" or ""The Mindbody Prescription: Healing the Body, Healing the Pain". I had back pain for over two years and now have none after reading the books. It is a holistic approach that makes perfect sense that is very effective for most people.

I think I have the same problem. I am 20 and I am active and fit. When I do certain things like: stand up for a long time, physical labor such as shoveling, and play hockey I get lower back pain. If you find a good way to cure yours let me know.
I think that my back is curved more than normal, as in it curves in too far towards my butt.

I had a similar problem. When I was 16 I started getting back pain that would not go away. It got so bad that I could barely walk. I was brushed off. I was told that it was a bruised muscle. I was only given muscle relaxers and told that it would get better. I was at the doctors every week because I was constantly hurting. After a year, it got better. Four years later the back pain came back and my new doctor still brushed me off because x-rays showed nothing. I was only sent to Physical Therapy. I finally got upset that no one was listening and went to a spine specialists. After an MRI I found out that I had a herniated disk. After a few years of conservative treatment and re-herniating it, I am now having to get surgery. My point is that if one doctor will not listen, go and see a new doctor, preferably a spine specialist. If I went to the spine specialist when I was 16 I might not need to be getting surgery.

sounds like spondyliosis, which I have. I deal with it by doing lots of yoga which has helped but still can't stand for long periods or walk on pavement very far. Don't want to have fusion but could be an option.
