I recently had a gastric emptying scan done to test for delayed gastric emptying (aka gastroparesis). I've been having near constant nausea for about 4 months now.

The results for the test said that it took 92 minutes for my stomach to empty half of the radioactive egg they made me eat.

They said that the normal range for people is 45 to 100 minutes ... so i was on the slow side of normal. The nurse said that even though I was in the normal range, 92 minutes is on the slow side and might be the cause of my nausea.

Can anyone give me some incite into this?

how bad is it that it took me 92 minutes to empty half of the egg?

is it true that this could be causing my nausea?

does a slightly slow emptying time indicate that i'll likely get worse, and eventually develop full-fledged gastroparesis?

I've read about gastroparesis and am scared to death of it because it sounds so horrible and treatment for it seems very limited. Most people with gastroparesis seem to simply have to live with nausea and vomiting all the time. I can't imagine living with this nausea much longer ... definitely not the rest of my life.

i should mention that i have a hiatal hernia which causes acid reflux. I take protonix once a day for this. i've had this for about a year but i didn't start having the nausea until about 4 months ago.

honestly i'm really scared and depressed these days because i don't know what's wrong with me or if i will ever get better. I'd really appreciate any input that anyone has to offer.

thanks.

That is slow and it could cause nausea.
A reason that may be your problem is lack of magnesium in your diet. Every muscle in your body contains magnesium and helps them function

There is a site in the Information Archive at the Top of this board about the Miracle of Magnesium -- it is worth reading.

Thanks Harry, I'll definitely give magnesium a try. I have a dietary supplement that contains 200 mg of magnesium and 500 mg of calcium in each serving. Is this an adequate daily dose or should i take more?

Hi joe,
The daily dose for magnesium is 400mgms.And it best taken in divided doses to increase absorption. You may not need the calcium since most people get that with the dairy and other food they intake.

Calcium is also natures tranqulizer and could slow down your intestines??

Thanks again Harry. I was also wondering what is your opinion of ppi's? Do you think that they could contribute to slow stomach emptying since they reduce stomach acid?

Also, Harry is there anything else that you would suggest I take, in addition to magnesium? I was thinking about trying a digestive enzyme .... what are your thoughts on this?

I JUST got my gastric empying results back today. And I was diagnosied with Gastroparesis (sp?) (just what I need right now...)but I heard that it could help to eliminate foods that contain fat (not something easy) . Well, I'm going to a motility specialist soon with the result+a bouquet of other symptoms and we'll see what he suggets.

I'm sorry you've been diagnosed with gastroparesis GirlWithPain. I wish you the best of luck with it and anything else you are having to deal with.

And yes, you should definitely avoid fatty foods since they slow digestion. I'm sure the motility specialist will have alot of other helpfull suggestions as well.

Anyways, good luck with everything.
