View Full Version : Could I have diabetes?

In 11/04 I went to my GP complaining of being extremely tired even after sleeping for long periods. She did a blood test that came with very high haemoglobin counts and diagnosed polycythaemia, but said it shouldn't cause me any problems, certainly wasnt causing my symptoms, and that it seemed I was very dehydrated (when she took blood she said she could see it was thicker than it should be, now I take aspirin to thin it).

I wasnt overly happy with the diagnosis because I *shouldnt* be dehydrated, I drink ALL the time, probably in excess of 4 litres a day. It's taken me this long to even consider diabetes, dont ask me why because my grandparents and my dad all have it. But I was looking at a list of symptoms just now. I've had three yeast infections in the last year, from may to september last year I lost 30lbs without even trying and fell way underweight, to 108lbs at 5'6'', but now my perfect vision is starting to go. I just assumed I was getting short or long sighted (can never remember which way is which, but everything is blurry anyway so it's moot), until I read this list.

Weird thing is, it fits perfectly, but in the 5 blood tests I've had since November not one has ever picked up on any wrong glucose readings. Which makes me think it might be all in my head! Would a normal blood test be abnormal?

When I was diagnosed a year ago I went to the doctor because I had a yeast infection. I also could not get enough to drink and had frequent urination and was constantly tired. My doctor tested my urine and saw that there was a high amount of sugar in it so she took blood and did a test on it. It does not hurt to get a test run to see if you are diabetes. If you have family members that are diabetic you should ask them if you can use their meter to test your blood sugar. Take it as soon as you wake up in the mornings. If it is higher than 120 you probably are diabetic or borderline diabetic. Again diabetes is nothing to mess with so it wouldn't hurt for you to ask your doctor.

Your symptoms sure sound like diabetes, at least what I experienced. You need to go back to the dr and insist on more tests. Maybe an A1C which tells you what your blood sugar has been running for the last three months. There is also a test that they run for Type 2 diabetes where you drink this sugary drink and they test your blood sugar at different times. I don't know to much about this test as I am a Type 1 diabetic. But please get back to the dr and insist on something being done. You can't keep living like you are (thirsty, tired, fatigued). This is just a hunch, but maybe have your thyroid tested too. Good Luck to you and let us know how you come out. Amy

Uh, well I used my dad's glucose monitor to do a finger stick at 7am this morning when I got up (hadn't eaten since 10:30 and had only drunk water during the night) and it was 134. When I did it last night 2.5 hours after eating it was 182.

I think I'll go see my GP again.
