I had a very bad sore throat that started a few weeks ago along with a bad cough and cold. I went to the doctor after a few days and he gave me a penicillin antibiotic prescription that I took for 10 days which cleared everything up. It's been a few days since the last dose of that medicine and I now have a sore throat again. My mom suggested that it could be allergies but I have never had a sore throat from allergies. Is this possible?

Absolutely! Your only allergic symptom could be a sore throat. Recently I've been around people with only these reactions too.
It could also be viral, with or w/o a fever, and of course there's the more severe which you've recently been treated for.

If you gargle with warm salt water and the sore throat goes away, it's allergies. Otherwise it's an infection and perhaps another round of anitibiotics is needed.

My thoat bothers me as well as other things. I have just gotten used to being hoarse!! Did the doc do a thoat culture?? But like it has been said before if it viral then there is nothing that can be done, then just wait it out. Hope you feel better!!

Sounds to me that, either you did not take the penicillin long enough, or you have a resistant form of bacterial infection, in which case you would need to take a different antibiotic, and take it for an extended period of time.
The 10 days of penicillin took your sore throat away, right? Then it came back a few days later, after you stopped taking the antibiotic. If your sore throat was from allergies, then your sore throat would have continued to bother you, with or without the penicillin. You allergies don't go away for 10 days, just to come back several days after you stop taking an antibiotic.
If it was an infection, but you weren't on penicillin long enough, and the infection wasn't totally killed, then that means that the bacteria that is causing your current infection is stronger, and penicillin might not be able to kill it. If it were me, I would ask the doctor for a different antibiotic, and I would stay on that antibiotic long enough to make sure that ALL of the infectious bacteria is gone.

Well said Beersoids. This goes for sinus infections as well. So don't let the doctor try to tell you it's just allergies!
