I searched this board to see if Insulin Resistance and Iron was discussed before.... sorry if it was and I missed it.
Anthony Calpo corresponded with Dr D about the effects of iron on insulin resistance [sensitivity]. Pretty interesting [lengthy] article if you care to read it:

It was interesting Frankie. Didn't get to read the entire thing, but most of it. Gee, maybe we should all give blood more often???? Seems they come up with a new theory every single day.
Take care, and have a good one....

Heart44: I can't say much about iron but I have just finished reading a very interesting report about Insulin and heart disease. The report said that Insulin pushes blood glucose into the cells where it produces energy and it moves triglycerides into body fat cells for storage but unfortunately if there is too much Insulin because of excess Carb's it packs triglycerides and LDL Cholesterol into the arteries. If there is not enough Hdl to come behind to clean up the extra LDL then there becomes a buildup in the arteries. It makes some sense to me because diabetics often have heart disease and problems with their arteries and veins. I have to say this may be true but oh my the diet is hard to stick too. It claims that if you are strict enough it will reverse the buildup. Most records say that our heart disease is going up along with diabetes. What have you heard about Iron, the only thing I have heard is it is not recommended for Seniors.

That's interesting. I wonder how often a person would have to give blood to affect insulin resistance. Once a month?

Heart44; I had a little trouble getting that site but did at last, interesting. The levels of iron I'm not sure of, one thing I have heard is that if a women's level of iron is low she often may have hair loss that is corrected when the level is brought up. We are complex human beings. :)

Anthony Calpo's first article about iron is part of a Q & A series called "Straight Out of My Box 6".
He discusses how iron levels were adjusted in one study:

Page down about 4 or 5 questions to "Iron and Blood Donation".
Note: there is no space in "html", but I couldn't delete the space
