When I am driving at night I have trouble merging onto the highway because I cannot tell who is in the closer lane to me and who is in the farther lane. With people's lights on I can't tell how far anyone is from me. I have asked my doctor about this and he says there's nothing he can do. I find this hard to believe. Does this mean I should only drive in the daytime? Pretty hard considering I have a full time job and I get out at night, and during the winter it's dark at 4:30.

Hey YankeeGirl,
Sorry but I believe your dr is right. There is nothing they can do. I, too , have this problem, after a few eye surgeries, plus I really don't have much of any depth perception at any time. I had to give up driving at night about 18 yrs ago. I had to change my work hours (does your company have flex-time?). I live about 3 or 4 miles from work. And it does get dark at 4-4:30 here, too. So, when the time changes in Oct, I change my hours at work with it. (7:30am-4:00pm) I change my hours back, when it starts getting lighter at night. So, really it's only a couple of months.
It isn't easy to make these changes, but there are ways to deal with it the best we can. I wouldn't want to get killed trying to drive at night, or hurt anyone else, either. So I stay off the roads. A lot of people loose their night driving ability as they age, so you are by no means alone. And like I said it's a hard thing, but...I know my job isn't worth getting killed over.
