View Full Version : Hormone or thyroid testing and anxiety?

Has anyone who has suffered from anxiety been diagnosed with hormone imbalances or thyroid problems? Just wondering if something in my body is "off" that is contributing, and if getting that fixed would help with the anxiety, panic, headaches, fatigue, and general "unwellness" I feel so often.

I've been thinking more and more that as a woman it could be related to hormones. My anxiety problems started when i was about 12, right about the time I started puberty. Hmmmm....

I thought the same thing when mine started again for the second time..The first time I had full blown panic attacks, but this time I had just weakness--the doc called it a "limited symptom" attack. I went to the endocrinologist and had all sorts of tests--everything was normal, including estrogen, cortisol, and thyroid. It's worth a shot to go get checked out--at least it'll give you peace of mind. Hang in there!!!

I think you're on to something. My anxiety started about 10 years ago after the breakup of an 8 year relationship. I couldn't eat, sleep...I was a wreck. I dropped about 20 pounds in a month and stayed at 93 pounds for a long time. I think I chemically changed - and this is when my anxiety began. I've always felt the connection to what was happening with my body.

I'm going to a women's clinic tomorrow to have all my hormones tested (my thyroid screening was normal) and am awaiting results of testing for anemia. I started have weird heart palps with adrenaline rushes about 6 weeks ago and have also had my heart checked out and that's not the problem. My GP seems to be sort of at a loss, but thought checking out my hormones was certainly worth doing. This started after a death in my family and I am open to the fact that my symptoms were spawned by all the anxiety I was feeling, but it also feels like a "chemical" imbalance in my body. My symptoms have improved (I won't list all) but am still left with elevated HR (mainly at night) and chest pressure/pain. I have a prescription for sleep/anxiety, but am trying to do without if I can. I'm 46, slim and have always been healthy and don't have an overly stressful life. I do feel like I've been in perimenopause for about 5-6 yrs. I'm anxious to find out if the hormones are contributing to my continued symptoms. If not, then I guess I need to just treat my anxiety! (I hate taking medication!) Anyway, might be worth checking out - you know your body best!
