View Full Version : what kind of doctor?

What kind of doctor should I see to get tested for diabetes? Right now I don't have a general doctor, just a Gyne. Can anyone test, or will they most likely send me to a specialist, so I should just go there first?

My mother has Type II. I tested negative for gestational diabetes, yet both of my kids were born weighing over 11 lbs. I think something has to be going on.

Any doc can order a glucose tolerance test like you get when your pregnant. A simple urine test can tell if your bs is going high enough to spill into your urine 180 or over. Good luck

Kiera,
A couple of fasting blood glucose test should be enough to diagnose type 2, or insulin resistance, which is a precursor to type 2. Occasionally, however, one's fasting blood glucose levels are completely normal, yet the body is actually not processing glucose correctly. If you want to be absolutely positive, you can get a glucose tolerance test, ask your doctor to run an A1c, or you can purchase an inexpensive blood glucose monitor (I believe WalMart carries one) and some test strips and test yourself. If you do this, keep a log and show it to your doctor.

Target blood glucose levels for a NON-diabetic person are as follows:

Fasting: Less than 100
Before lunch, supper and snack: less than 110
Two hours after meals: Less than 140
Bedtime: Less than 120
A1c (or HbA1c): Less than 6%.

Remember, these are targets for the NON-diabetic. Targets for diabetic people would be slightly higher (as I posted elsewhere on the board).

I think you are right to be concerned and watchful considering you had two high-weight babies.

Ruth
