In short: I became ill about two months ago, abdominal pain (in the front of low abdomen) and I lost 8 kg. Since I was sucessfully treated for cancer 10 years ago a cancer-reocurence tests were made (bloed test) with all values normal. Now I found on the internet the destciption of Diabetes type 1 with a sudden onset and it got me thinking. Since the blood tests were negative and for the scan/results I will have to wait 3 weeks I wonder if I do not actually suffer diabetes. (In the tests I had the glucose test wasn't included but they ordered it now, but it will be done simultaneously with the scan - so I won't know till then)
Some facts
I allways had an aversion to suggar. At it sometimes but tried to avoid as far as possible (my son (13) has never eaten sugar or drank a sweet drink)
For ages already I eat a double of what others eat. (After a good meal I get hungry after about fifteen minutes (and eat some more) )
My symptoms now are:
- 8 kg lost in two months
- feel ill (general feeling of not being well)
- pain in abdomen
- sometimes I feel sort of ants walking over my back and legs
- I feel very tired
- sometimes I drink a lot but then it is normal again (ditto urination)
- first time in my life I had a very depressed feeling (never experienced (in such intensity) before; it was before I went to the doctor so the depression didn't come from fear of cancer or such - I thought I had a flue)
Now possibly somebody would give me some advice. (Are the symptoms recognisable?, Should I avoid eating normal food (I think white bread makes me feel worse) or any other info/advice.
Thanks
Pavel

Some of the symptoms may be diabetes, but I suspect you have a different problem, when you go get your tests then you will know for sure. In the meantime, if any food doesn,t agree with you, just avoid it, but you will know in a few weeks what is wrong, so in the meantime, try not to worry too much.

OK Thanks for your post. I had cancer before, and the symptoms I have now are different from that too. Anyway I'll wait. If I consider pro and contras of lymphoma I had 10 years ago than my chances to survive it again are between 60-80%. I don't know if having a severe Diabetes (as my symptoms are) has better chance of survival (and the quallity of life). If you survive cancer you mostly can live normally as I did till now. By diabetes I would probably have to inject insuline and I do not know what the quality of life is with such diabetes. Some sites I visited mentioned lots of problems. Well it is not nice to be ill, but one has to accommodate to it.

Pavell,
If you can survive cancer you can get thru Diabetes. I've had T1 for 14 years and in the beginning I thought it was the end of the world. It's not. Nowadays, taking an insulin shot is no bigger deal to me than brushing my teeth.
Depending on if you have T1 or T2 you may not even need insulin. All the horror stories we've all heard are from the days when we couldn't monitor our blood sugars closely. Blindness and amputations are not compulsory.
Good luck on those tests, and take care of yourself

@HeatherP Thanks for your post. I think/hope I can cope.. :)
Now I have a question:
I just bought test strips for urine testing and indeed glucose is "normal"
though hemaglobine/myoglobine was at the highest level of the scale. So I wonder has this anything to do with diabetes?
and
Is the urine test goed enough to discard the possibility of diabetes.
Any help oppreciated,
cheers
Pavel

Hello Pavell,
Sorry to hear the problems you are having.
I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in February 05, this year.
The syptoms I had started about 2 months before, I was drinking so much it was unbelieveable (And obviously urinating a lot lot more), I was tired all of the time, some days I'd sleep anytime I wasn't working. I just generally felt ill.
I went to my doctors and had a blood test done, as well as a finger ***** test, I believe my BGL was in the 30's.
The next day I got a call from my doctor and was rushed into A&E, I had severe diabetic ketoacidosis, raised pottasium (puts you at risk of a heart attack) and my BGL's were in like 30's. I was started on insulin immediately.
I learned that you can only live without insulin (I.e. when symtoms start with Type 1 when most of your pancreastic insulin producing cells have been attacked by your immune system) that you can only live for around 6 months without treatment. Rather scary.
Reading what you said and others, I'd agree perhaps this isn't T1 diabetes, maybe something else? Of course, only your tests will show. :)
As for quality of life, well, I haven't been diagnosed long. It's all a shock and a lot to take in, but already my glucose levels are 98% of the time within the 4-7 range (very proud of that!) and my A1C and cholesterol etc are perfect. It's becoming now an aim to get it perfect and that's what doesn't make me mind doing what you do with the injecting and testing.
You just get used to it... :)
Hope this helps.

@DanUK
Thanks for sharing that. I now also think it's not diabetes: the urine strip test (I repeated it a couple of times) is now on all scores normal. Ketones are normal too, so I doubt it would be at normal level if I had diabetes. I now consider thyroid malfunctions, I have some symptoms which point that way. But the symptoms, which were like yours, (and also very severe) are now easing down. I will have to wait it out, the scans and glucose test and thyroid test, (I had also a lot of stress before I felt ill) so there can be a number of reasons for the weight loss and the symptoms.

I was dx with type 1 diabetes over 2 years ago and am in my 30's.
I had many of your symptoms as well.
I had pain in the abdomen, felt as well like my insides of my abdomen were going to fall out at times, it was weird.
I was VERY tired.
I had pain.
I was dizzy at times
I lost a lot of weight. around 10 lbs before i was hospitalized
Had ketoacidosis, a severe case, it's a wonder i lived. I had been walking around like this for a while....
I felt ill and I also was severly depressed.
All from the diabetes.
You should get with a specialist asap.
My doc didn't know much about diabetes and sent me to a cds after my release from the hospital.
I am on the pump now and love it!

Well thanks for sharing that. I am having the glucose test today. But I bought teststrips and tested my urine, all normal. Therefore I think it is not diabetes after all. But you never know till the real test are done. Within a week I will have the diagnose, I will post it then.
