Does anyone know how long it takes for muscle pain to go away after stopping Lipitor?

Sagg....It depends on how long U have been on it, and to what degree your pain is, everyone is different. How long were U on Lipitor and exactly what kind of pain did U get?

Alot of folks here take Co Q10, it is suppose to be very good for building up the muscles, and although very few drs. tell you, it should be taken if U are on a statin. Statins deplete your body of CoQ10, but like I said, very few drs. tell U this. I'm sure others will come on and tell U more about it, as I have never taken it. Best wishes....

From what I have read it varies. I can only speak from my husband's condition. The first time he stopped taking it (he forgot to take it on vacation) the pain eased considerably within two days. When he got home his dosage was increaed and he ached all over. Unfortunately. he continued at the higher dose, 20mg, for three weeks before we put two and two together. He has been off it for a little over 3 weeks, but during that time he developed a burning in his calves, but the major pain in his hip and leg has been sharply reduced. This morning he has a slight pain in his hip and some slight burning in the knee, but nothing to compare with the pain he was experiencing. He seems to relapse a little when he attempts to do too much or exercise. He is on 400mg of Co10 enzyme and he uses a Tens electric stimulator. I keep telling him to go slow. It may be six months to a year before the pain caused by Lipitor completely goes away from all that I have read.

Sagg - I can only speak for myself concerning your question about Lipitor.

I also put 2 + 2 together after experiencing pains/aches/soreness/weakness in both legs and arms after being on Lipitor for 2 months. This also spread up to my neck and shoulders, as well as my feet!

I want to add that I'm a very active sports person - play tennis at least once a week, and either walk/run daily, and lift light weights - so this PAIN I was experiencing came totally out of left field.

Unfortunately, I had continued to take it for 2 additional months, because my doctor thought it might be a pinched nerve or some other back-related problem causing my pains (but obviously he was wrong after sending me to 2 spine doctors, and having MRI and EMG tests done, which came back negative).

I've been off the Lipitor for 5 weeks now - I can honestly say I feel 75% better - sometimes my arms will ache, or my feet - my major complaint is both of my wrists ache (almost arthritis like) - I think the Lipitor just aggravated my wrists, since I'm sure I'm starting to develop arthritis in both wrists. I'm on the computer all day at work, so it hasn't been much fun.

In addition, on the advice of my people, I started to take CoQ10 a few days ago - I'm not sure how long before it starts to have any effect on me, but I'm going to continue on it.

In summary, I was on Lipitor for 4 months total - I'm in my 5th week of NO Lipitor, and I'm DEFINITELY feeling better!

Good luck!

Mark

i was on Lipitor for about2 months.(10mg). Then I had pnumonia and was in the hospital for a week where they did not give it to me. After I was home a week I started on it again. I was on it for about 4 weeks. Then I got pains in my upper arms right wrist and both knees. I read on line about Lipitor causing muscle pain, so I stopped it. It has been maybe 2 weeks now and I still have the pain. Nothing makes it stop not even acetemeniphin. I started on 100 mg of COQ10 for about 4 days now. I just hope this pain will eventually go away.

Sagg,

Everyone reacts to statins differently, and recovers from their side effects differently.

You were not on them that long - so I'd like to think you'll recover quickly.

Try taking the CoQ10 with a fish-oil capsule (or with a little fatty food if you don't have any). It is better absorbed when taken with some fat...

You can also safely up the dose to 200mg/day.

OK I tried CoQ10 and went back on my centrum silver. After about two weeks I started to have an itchy scalp and hair dropping out. I have been off of both for about a week and a half now. I am going to a dermetologist on the 20th. Don't know if the CoQ10 vitamins or what caused it. but I still have the itch and hair loss.

Sagg...I found this on CoQ10. Although it is rare, if your as sensative as I am, it might be the Q10. I tried a lousy 100 mgs of non flush Niacin and itched for hrs. every single time I took it. So many folks take large doses and get nothing, and I get a reaction to a silly 100 mgs....

Sagg...About 2 yrs. ago I developed a red rash and itching on my scalp, especialy at the nape of my neck. I was on nothing new, so had no idea what was happening. When I went to the dr. for a reg. checkup I showed it to him, and he gave me a prescription for some shampoo. I brought it down to the pharmacy and the pharmacist told me it would cost me 54.00!! Seeing I know him, he told me to get a bottle of T-Gel shampoo, as it would do the same thing and cost me about 7.00. After about 3 times of using it the rash got much better as did the itching. To this day noone seems to know what it is, as it comes and goes, so I use my reg. shampoo 98% of the time, but if I get the itchys I use the T-gel for a few nites and it is fine. I have a very acidy system and also love acidy foods, so it could be that, plus my hairdresser told me when U get "older" and you start to gray, the hair gets corse and U also lose alot of moisture. It was just about the time I did start to go gray and decided not to color my hair any longer and go "all natural".. :D so who knows, that could have been it too? And yes, my hair was falling out a lil, definitely something I don't need, as I have very fine hair as it is.....

Till U see the dermatologist, try the T-gel. One thing I will tell U, the orignal has a very strong smell like tar to it, so U might want to get one of the floral sented ones, as the tar smell kind of stays even after all the rinsing. Hope this helps you till U get an answer....

JJ,

Your symptoms appear similar to seborrheic dermatitis.

Yup, it does, but I have no dandruff??? Whatever it is, comes and goes. Out of nowhere I get this red patchy thing at the nape of my neck, which sometimes gets itchy, and sometimes doesn't, so I just use the darn T-gel a few nites and it goes. At times it won't come back for months, so I am not about to go to another dr. to have them take my $$$$, they get enough of it.
One dr. told me it was a "birth mark". LOL I told him, if it was, then how come it appeared 60 yrs. after I was born? Needless to say he wasn't amused. Oh well, guess he had no sense of humor... ;)

Don't know if U guys got the wicked T-storms we had yesterday and last nite, but it didn't cool a darn thing off. Now they say by sat. it will cool down. Hope so, this AC is starting to get on my nerves. I like open windows and some fresh air. Being cooped up all winter with heat, I am not happy being cooped up with AC. Seems we have no spring or fall, just winter & summer. BUMMMER for sure.

Have a good one, and CYL...

JJ,

Believe me, what you have is no birth mark. I DO have such a birth mark, a red patch on my neck which has been there since the day I was born.

But I do sometimes have flare-ups of seborrheic dermatitis. It did involve red marks on my scalp, with some itching. My doctor didn't know what to make of it, so he sent me to a dermatologist. Well, he diagnosed it, and told me to use Zincon shampoo. Well, that did seem to clear it up. But every now and then it manifests itself. Hydrocortisone cream is also quite effective if it appears elsewhere.

I know it isn't a birth mark. I almost laughed in his face, as I am sure I would have noticed it MANY years ago. Like I said, not all drs. graduate at the head of their class..... ;)

As long as it stays in that lil area and the T-gel helps it, I'm not going to get an ulcer over it. I used the Hydro cream also, but that was a pain to try and look in the mirror at the very back of your head and apply it, so I stuck with the shampoo. Can U imagine the stupid prescription would have cost 54.00 compared to the stuff I got for 7? Thank goodness my pharmacist knows me so well and suggested it. Oh well, time to go see what the tv has to offer, but I don't think much.

Have a good one, stay cool, and TTYL....

I've been on Lipitor for a long time (at least 2 years) and have noticed knee and hip pains have increased. What do any of you take who have stopped the Lipitor? I had stopped taking the CQ10 but am going back on it until I see my doctor regarding getting off Lipitor or? possible interaction between Lipitor and Zetia (which was added to my prescription list about 6 months ago).

Ok everyone. I went to the dermatologist and he said that the hair loss was due to the trauma of having pneumonia. He said a bad trauma shuts down your hair folicals. When you get better some of them do not wake up. New hair is pushing the dead hair out, and it will be about three months to see any thickening of hair. So at least an end is in sight. I wish I had never heard of Lipitor. I am on Cucurmin, cinnamon and CoQ10 now. Get test numbers next month.
