Can some one ouththere help me please. Over the last two months my ears are acting so strange. They feel pressure/full and at times flickering. I have a horrible thumping noise, sometimes will roar. I have a tube in the right ear because intially mt ent said it was my eustacian tube. I have had a CT of my ears and it was said to be fine. I had a mri of my brain it was said to be fine. I am now so damn scared and can barely function. I have gone to the doctor at least 10 times. I just saw a dentist who said it could be musclar-from my jaw and gave me muscle relaxants and is making me a splint for my mouth. I can not live with this it is horrid ailment and noone wants to hear me complain. I know noone with this problem. I heard about ginko biloba but have not used it. I take a mulitvit. and vit b's to try and help. I am so scared. I live in New york and you would think these doctors would know something-they do not! I haVE TWO YOUNG KIDS AND i AM NO LONGER A GOOD MOM BECAUSE i AM IN HELL WITH MY EARS.

i can relate to the hell you speak of, i have or had the same sx.
this could be middle ear myoclonus,or palatal myoclonus.
most drs know nothing about this, i have seen over 20, my only saving grace were 2, dr denis poe in boston, and dr. sismanis in richmond va. i live in va, and have been all over the east coast. dr sismanis surgically severed the middle ear tendons and this has helped.
can you describe the fullness a little better, do you get popping or snapping?
the flicking and thumping are definatley spasms, the flicking is probabley the tensor tympani muscle, thank god i dont have it anymore, it would flick to outside sounds and my own voice....horror!
list every symptom you have and i will try to explain them.
can you travel to boston or richmond?
hang in there!

Hello,
Just to second what lib has said, generally speaking, thumping and fluttering and vibration type sensations and sounds in the ears can be muscular in nature, as can fullness in the ears. Your dentist may well be on to something regarding your jaw. He probably explained but the jaw is connected to the ears through a complex system of muscles and nerves. Particularly if you clench or grind your teeth you are prone to a disorder called tempero mandibular joint disorder that can present as only ear symptoms. Muscle relaxants may well help - valium in small doses can also help. It is important to try not to stress too much about this as stress will cause the muscles to spasm even worse. As lib said, try looking up myoclonus, or tensor tympami syndrome, or tensor velor palatini - the last two are the names of the muscles that can be involved.
I went through hell with these sort of symptoms, they came on when I developed an inner ear disorder. Another thing that can feasibly cause this type of upset are atypical forms of migraine. There is also a condition called menieres disease that can sometimes present without dizziness initially - this causes full ears, but it's very rare and it's more likely to be something else.
It's really a question of keeping on searching and finding the right doc. The top of the tree when it comes to the ear are doctors called neurotologists. They generally specialise in dizziness, but they had to train as ENTs first and tend to know a heck of a lot about the ear. If you're having no luck elsewhere you could try one of those. Follow your dentists instructions and check out info on tmjd. It could definitely all be caused by that.
If it's any consolation my ears were awful, full, vibrating etc... I am now much, much better with the help of splint therapy (I have tmjd also) and time.
best,

One more thing - if you go in to a search engine and put in 'idiopathic stapedial muscle spasm' then do some reading you will find people with similiar complaints,
best,
best,
