Hello Everyone
I have been taking MS Contin since June 2004. My prescribed dosage is 30mg, 3x a day. This past week I think that I may be developing some sort of allergic reaction which I think is a bit odd. Last night I was awake almost the entire night as the itching has gotten so much worse. This morning I needed another dose, and I am climbing out of my skin. It is just my luck that it has gotten much worse on a weekend when the doctor's office is closed. I also do not have any rash, so I don't think this is serious. Has any one else had this happen with their med's after taking them for such a long time?

Hi Jeanne, Itching is one of the most common side efects of opiates, that is itching without a rash, It's caused by a hytamine release which is a response to the morphine. It is odd it's just now presenting but without a rash, I doubt the ER would consider it a an allergy that required immediate attn. I would take some bennedryl over the weekend untill you can talk to your doc abuot it.
Did you recently get a new precription filled with a differnt generic than your used too? Aside from that, it is strange to be a problem now, but no hyves or rash, no allergy. Just a side effect that's easily treated with antihystamines like Phenergan, Visterill or adderax if benedryl doesn't work.
Good luck, Dave
PS, Dont scratch. ;)

Hello Dave
Thanks for your response, and sharing your knowledge with me. I did recently start a new prescription about a month ago. The script was for Glucophage and I got the generic form, Metformin. This script was for my diabetes.
Upon researching the internet, I did find a few other possibility's for the itching. It may not be my pain medication after all. I have had a couple of other symptoms that all could be related to Jaundice and itching also goes along with that. I will call my dr. on Tuesday.
Thanks again and I hope that you have a Wonderful Memorial Weekend.
