I had emergency lacer surgery yesterday to repair a tear.

The doctor said the floaters that I was seeing was blood and my body would dissolve it in time. But he didn't say how long that would take... can someone help me?

Thanks

Hi LeLu, I had a retinal tear in my eye last May, with the blood floating around, too.
I had the laser surgery. The blood in my eye settled in one area, so I could see it in my peripheral, but didn't block the central vision, once the tear was fixed. It takes some time for the blood to re-absorb. I can't remember exactly how long, but it was a couple of months or so. I guess it depends on how much is in there. My friends father, who is diabetic, has twice had bleeds which left him nearly blind. But these, too, were re-absorbed after a time. He had a lot of "debris" so it has taken him maybe 4-5 months this time before he had useful vision.
Hope this help a bit. I've had several detachments (1986) and back then, it was 5-7 days in the hospital. After this last tear, I walked a mile to get a coffee afterwards, then took a train & then a bus & then drove from where my car was parked, back home! This is WAY better. Good luck, and make sure you keep all your post-op check-ups!!!

HELLASRULES,
Thanks for your post!
Wow, you've have had it all.
Immediately after the laser I drove home (about 50 miles) but couldn't see in that eye for a couple hours.

I saw the doctor this morning, says the laser scar looks good but said no heavy lifting for two more weeks. That's no problem, for I'm retired. He also said he thought that my floaters would dissolve in 2 to 4 months due to it being blood. He said, if it had been gel that it might never clear. He said he had a retinal tear last year and still had floaters due to his being the gel.

Sounds like you are doing AOK there. That's great! I envy you're being retired. I still have about 15+ yrs to go. Wow! You're eye doc had a retinal tear? I guess that really gives him an edge...since now he knows exactly what his patients are dealing with. NOT that I would wish it on anyone, but...what insight that must have given him, after years of being on the other side!
Follow all the rules he gave you and you should do just fine. And happy retirement!

HELLASRULES,
Yes, it made me feel better to know the doc had the experience of having a retinal tear. He mention some folks have surgery to remove the floaters. He also said it was surgery that could go wrong... said he wasn't about to let his buddy do the surgery on him.

Enjoy the time you have... remember you will be 15 years older when you retire. Time seems to fly by even faster after retirement. I retired at 54, and I don't know where the last years have gone! But I've loved it and still do!
