View Full Version : Impaired Night Vision Associated With Flash Burn?

I am a 50 yr. old woman with some normal vision loss due to presbyopia in my 40's. However, for many years, I've been bothered when I try at night (beginning at a little after dusk) to look at something about 4 feet or more away. I can't "see" it unless I focus a little away from the object in any direction. And then of course, I can't really see it because I'm not looking directly at it, but at least I can tell that it is in my field of vision.

I remembered a few days ago that I once had severe flash burn from an arc welder maybe 30 years ago. Does anyone know if there might be any correlation?

Thank you!

I can't answer your questions, but I would suggest you download an Amsler grid from the internet and use it one eye at a time, in bright and dim light, to see if you have any retinal damage. It would show any blind spots you might not be aware of. Usually when you have to look slightly away from an object to see it, there's a blind spot in the central vision. But it is peculiar that this happens to you in dim light rather than bright light.

Thank you, Torre, for suggesting the Amsler Grid! I've printed one out, and after testing, there does seem to be a problem, and I will bring it up with an eye doctor. :)

Glad I could be of help. Mark on the grid where the problem is. If it's a blind spot (sometimes it's wavy lines) outline the spot so the doc knows the size and location.

Good luck.

Once again, thank you for the advice, Torre!
