I posted this on the main message board, but then decided you all might know something, so here I go.
I went to the emergency room today because my throat was killing me and my tonsils had green and white puss on them (sorry to gross you out) Anyway they took my blood and diagnosed me with mono. I'm in tons of pain so I have pain killers. Its incredibly hard to swallow. Am I going to choke and die in the middle of night? My tonsils are so swollen that they are just about touching the little hanging thing in my throat. I feel like its getting hard to breath.. ughhh anyone have any advice?
p.s. even the nurse in the emergency room said, "someone is going to have to be hospitalized. " http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/frown.gif

I hope you're ok! I had mono once, but I don't even remember having throat problems. My throat may have been sore, but mostly I was extremely tired and weak. I wish I could help. Good luck!

Don't worry, you are not going to choke in the middle of the night. Are you at home now? Mono can be a debilitating condition, but it will pass. You may be tired, sore and weak, but YOU WILL get better! http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif

I don't know anything about mono but at one of my previous jobs, this one girl had mono and she told me that it started out as cold sores, then she was tired all the time with a sore throat and a swollen neck. She also told me that it is conatagious and you can easily bring it on to yourself.

My husband had it. He would fall asleep literally anywhere! Once while driving. Very scary. It is something that lays dormant in your body and flares up when your very tired and sick, not eating right etc.
The drs office gave him vit B shots once a week for 4 weeks and he felt so much better! He suffered with it for a long time thinking it was just the flu and it would pass but he was just way to tired and fevered and sore for to long.
Take care of yourself.

My brother had it as a teen and his throat was quite sore and glands were swollen but I dont remember the pus in the throat for a min it sounded like you could have a strep infection but if they said Mono they must know what they are talking about.

I've had it as well, and while I did have a sore throat, what got me the most was how exhausted I felt, and how suddenly it would hit. I had it in school and had to leave class in the middle several times.
It is a virus and yep, it'll stay in your body forever, usually remaining dormant, but can be reactivated. It also may leave you prone to some other health conditions.
I've never read about it being fatal though, just very uncomfortable and irritating.
