View Full Version : Music, a cure for depression

WHY??

Today, I was listenin to my favorite songs on my computer. I have been really depressed today, but when I put on a song by the Black Crowes, (Sister Luck) I felt tons better. I put that song on repeat, and then I played poker with myself(what I do when happy). I am having a great time, and have felt better than I ever had. I am sitting in my room listing to my favorite music, and just doing whatever.

I think music in it self is a form of therapy, and anyone who is suffering from depression should give it a try!!!!!!
Please give me feed back. And anyone who wishis, please share some music that you think helps depression.

I think music does help in certain cases. When I listen to music from a better time in my life I do feel better if only for a little while. Songs that remind me of special people help also. Now that I think about it I should probably do this more often. Thanks for the good posting. :)

if listening to music helps you then I'd suggest going one step further and start taking up some dancing along with your music. That'll help you even more.

Too funny...When I was in college that was the name of my term paper "Does music effect emotions" There is alot of research on it if you want to check it out at a library, but not as much as I thought. Yes it does help with depression...your body and mind reacts to different stimulations. However, I can't say that I would want to dance but I do relax while listening to some of my favorites. I even have headphones in my car just in case my kids are driving me nuts...I'll turn on one of my favorites and chill for a min or so. It's definitly a place that's ok to get "lost" in. Good luck.

I ttotally agree. Somewhere in the late 80's I got hooked on talk radio and never got off of it, even though its SO annoying and depressing anymore. My therapist MADE me change my station back to music and I feel a lot better. Its crazy!

your so right, when im in a bad mood i sometimes listen to some really angry songs and i just get my agression out by singing along (not loudly) ha ha, sounds weird but it works i feel fine after that.

and when im down i listen to some mellow songs or something that you really like, maybe even remind you of time when you were happy

Watching a movie helps me a lot. Gives me a break from my problems for a while. Or, I love to watch stand up comedy or comedy shows like Seinfeld or Everybody Loves Raymond.

Music too makes me feel hopeful.Though, a career in music was my childhood dream and one that won't be realized so its kind of bitter sweet when I listen to music.

Music's always been a great way for me to get away.. depression usually causes us to lose interest in normal activites, but I believe music is something that can never grow old. I'm not much of a rock fan, but I do love Linkin Park, a lot of their music I can relate to which helps bring out my energy, and techno music really helps me to relax and feel better. Not sure how, but it always works :)

Heres a list of music that always helps me:

1. Modest Mouse
2. The Black Crowes
3. Blue Oyster Cult
4. Pink Floyd
These bands all helped me a bunch, and some of you should check them out if never had before.

Cure? No. But it can be a temporary relief. Of course, depending on what you listen to, it can also just make you more depressed, angry, etc. I remember we had music therapy in the hospital. Couldn't tell you what we did, but I remember having it.
