When younger (I'm now 59)- I shot thousands of rounds of magnum shotgun ammo, while duck hunting. I never used hearing protection in the field. I developed a "constant" loud ringing in my left ear (tinnitus). I have tried most everything (many ear doctors...), and there wasn't anything they could do. Recently- In one of my health e-letters, they raved about the "mental..." benefits of a relatively new herb (to the USA) called "Vinpocetine" (from the periwinckle plant). I did a thorough web search on this, and there were many "double blind" tests that showed significant imporvement..., and no serious side-effects. Way down the list of benefits in just one article (of many), they listed tinnitus. I didn't pay the "tinnitus" part much attention ( I had resigned myself to living with it forever). I ordered Vinpocetine to take along with my Ginkgo Extract (taken for years), for mental benefits. A well respected source (not brand), is manufactured by a company in hungary. It's called "BioVinca". Two weeks ago, I started taking 10mg with morning meal, and 10mg with dinner (the most recommended dose). Well yesterday I noticed that I could "now" remember the names of many grade school friends, 45 years ago (impossible before)! WOW!
I was "amazed"! Then I took further mental/physical note, and realized that my tinnitus was from 90-100% gone! :bouncing:
TRY IT! Not that expensive, and LOTS... to gain!

Vinpocetine does work!!!!! I've bin taking it a week now and have already noticed nearly all my tinnitus has disapeared!!!

I can't thank the guy who wrote the first post enough.

I never had chronic tinnitus, but i had it bad enough for me to hear it day and night and interfer with my sleep.
Now i'm not saying its some miracle cure, but it helped me.

I was taking alot of vitamins too, but they ran out before i started taking vinpocetine.

Give it a go, it could just help you too.

To Scottls And Crazymotorbiker,
I just purchased a bottle of Vinpocectine and took my first 10mg dose. I've had horrible tinnitus since I aquired "sudden hearing loss" the beginning of last February. The ENT Doctor "thinks" it was due to a viral infection on the auditory nerve. I have a slight amount of hearing back, but its muffled, muted, low and distorted! The thing that has completely driven me crazy and into a deep state of General Anxiety Disorder, Major sleep deprevation and depression is the constant ringing, screeching, hissing and whistling, which at times continues growing throughout the day and night to where I'm ready to pull my hair out by mid to late evening!!!
My question is, are either of you on medication while getting the positive effects from the Vinpocectine? I've been on Xanax (.5mg a day since Feb.) and as of the last three weeks started on Lexapro (only 5mg. a day) although the Lexapro is making me feel worse and seems to be making the ringing and hissing worse (I'm thinking of weaning off it before I feel worse yet)! I was just wondering if while on the Xanax and Lexapro I can still get the benefits of this long waited for "possible" cure (Vinpocectine).
Best wishes on the continued success with this new found supplement to all who use it!!! I hope this stuff works equally well for me,, I NEED IT BAD!
Thanks for the posts!

I plan on buying this stuff next week. I will try this and then afterwards try the sonicare brush to make sure I don't mix up the results.

FYI: Lipoflavinoids did not work, returned them for a full refund at local store.

Yea, SAVE YOUR MONEY,, this is MORE HYPE,, MORE WORTHLESS JUNK!!!

I had HORRIBLE tinnitus since last February due to a Sudden Hearing Loss I suffered! I have tried EVERYTHING I've found on the internet as well as healthboards and NOTHING helps!!! It's driven me nearly crazy since it's every day, all day, through the night and has caused me to sleep on the couch for six months with the TV on and taking Xanax to help me get Three to Four hours of Interupped (up every couple hours or less) since this started! I know the Horrible General Anxiety Disorder which developed as a result of this only serves to make it worse, as does the sleep deprevation. But it's a vicious circle!! I'm Highly stressed because of the Unbearably loud screeching, hissing, ringing and squeeling day and night which causes me not to sleep which causes the noises to be worse,, etc., etc.,! Half the time the noise is SOOOO loud, I can't even here the TV without cranking it up almost full blast!! Things like Ginko Biloba (they say it takes at least six weeks to work,, I've been on high doses for over THREE MONTHS,, AND NO RELIEF) or Alpha Lipoic acid are supposed to help the tinnitus alot,, well, they do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO CURE THIS!! If you read online about the conditions these supplements are supposed to help,, you'll find mostly memory enhancement, and they all seem to be great for diabetes or lowering blood pressure. These wonderful MIRACLE "cure all" supplements are no more then a placebo at best! No one pill can help the thirty or forty areas that these supplements all claim to help! I guess they figure since they're not really sure what these supplements help,, they'll just list every possible ailment they can come up with and figure that somebody will have to "think" they've gotten relief on their pills!
I recently tried a NEW WONDER SUPPLEMENT I read about,,,Vinpocetine. This is another "CURE EVERYTHING" Miracle supplement!! It's supposed to do everything from helping restore memory loss, help Alzheimers sufferers, help cure your vision problems and also hearing problems such as tinnitus,, with dozens of other areas of help,,(YEA RIGHT!)! I took it out of DESPERATION and after two weeks,, wonder of wonder's, my ringing dropped dramatically to a lower hiss (still annoying but nowhere near as bad as before!!) for three days straight. I figured this is it, I've found the CURE!! WRONG!!!!!!! After the three days, the horrible ringing, screeching and squeeling returned bad as ever and though I'm still on the Vinpocetine,, I have'nt had any relief since those three days. So,, I guess that short period was just a "fluke"? I feel it had NOTHING what so ever to do with the supplement, otherwise,, the tinnitus would'nt have gone right back to where it was with no further relief! I know I sound BITTER, FRUSTRATED, FED UP and HOPLESS but I have read that unless you're just one of the LUCKY infrequent or mild sufferers of this potentially disabeling and life altering disease,, you Will suffer with this TORMENT for life!!! As far as getting "used to it",, I can only wonder if I'll see that day, I'm no kid and this has already cost me a career as well as damage to my mental and physical health!
I can only hold despise and CONTEMPT for the JERKS in the medical profession that tell all us sufferers to "just learn to live with it,, nothing can be done",, as well as the Wonderful medical researchers that can't be bothered finding cures (obviously not enough of the JERKS are personally suffering with this horror) as well as the good ole GOVERNMENT who can't see their way to give more of our tax dollars to fund research on this ailment,, (their too busy investing our dollars in much more important areas,,, THEIR POCKETS!)!!
So,, "does it ever go away"? NO, I guess it does'nt. My heart goes out to all of us that are victims of an IMCOMPENTANT medical field and UNCONCERNED researcher's and Government for our health and well being!

Okay I'll give it a shot.
Have you ruled out all the other possiblities ie. Meniere's disease, obstruction of wax or other foreign bodies, infectious disease of the inner, outer or middle ear, allergies, hardening of the ear drum, trauma?
Tinnitus may be associated with high blood pressure, hardening of the arteries, anemia, hypothyroidism, candidia, heavy metal toxicity, carbonmonoxide exposure, aspirin and some drugs. Dental fillings that use silver, mercury, copper and other metals may be responsible for a long list of neurological probs. Root canal can also be a culprit.
Do hair mineral analysis, blood and urine testing and even tests on your immune system.
I believe a whole host of problems are the result of underlying biomedical abnormalities.
Diet is also important: one study was done where symptoms improved when saturated animal fats were reduced in the diet. Yet another study showed the reduction of sugar produced lessening of symptoms. I've heard that a salicylate-free diet benefits some too. A salt free diet should be experimented with too for at least 6 weeks.
Supplements do work, unfortunately they do not work all the time and for everyone. As with most things it's more a case of biochemical individuality as to whether they are effective. Have you tried the gingko with the vinoceptine(sp)? I wouldn't give up on it just yet, not only is it important to try out these sups but make absolute sure that you get good quality from a reliable source.
Yet more things to try:
-high dose of B3 combined with inositol and B6- Vit A, D, calcium, magnesium, potassium, iodine, zinc and EFAs
- ginger, known for helping nausea helps tinnitus too
- a favourite DMG :)
