It's not uncommon to gain some weight when one first starts on insulin. The reason you may have been losing weight before is that if your blood glucose was running high, your body may have been burning fat and muscle tissue for fuel (if you had ketones in your urine, you were burning fat/muscle). Now that your body is able to properly utilize the glucose from your food, it is no longer burning the fat.

If one is sticking to a fairly good diet and exercise plan, the weight gain when insulin is first started usually doesn't amount to a whole lot...10 pounds or so (more if your body was really starving its tissues, but still not too much more than that). Eventually, you will stabilize, and then if you still need to lose weight you should be able to do so, again by following a strict diet and exercise regimen.

Of course thyroid problems could be causing this too, or it may be a combination of both starting on insulin and developing thyroid problems. Hopefully your doctor will be able to help you figure it out.
