View Full Version : Soy?

Hi,
I've read about the many benefits of soy, and the many dangers. My question is, is it only when one consumes a lot of soy when it is dangerous? I probably only have one cup of soy milk a day because i feel it's better than cows milk. What do you think?

If you have any kind of thyroid condition, I would RUN from it. If not, I still would be cautious. My opinion is I wouldn't drink it even if I were healthy. I don't think it's fit for consumption. I think there are lot more dangers than benefits.

If you don't want to drink cow's milk, why not try rice milk, or almond milk? I think they are pretty good.

Soy is a cash cow for food producers, who buy it dirt cheap then sell it at an inflated price to consumers as "health food"

JMHO

Well, I think cow's milk and dairy products are fine, myself. But if you don't really care for them, I wouldn't bother with them. If you are lactose intolerant, they would probably not be a good thing for you. Otherwise, anything is better than soy, that's my opinion.

Wheat is NOT toxic, but if you have gluten intolerance you probably cannot eat wheat products because of it.

I'm not afraid, lol, but if you do a search on "soy dangers" especially according to Mercola, then you'll see. By the way, there is ALOT of conflicting infor regarding wheat like, some sites say that it's good in it's perfect form(whole foods site) and then mercola says it's bad. I do think that there are more people that are sensitive to it than we think though! And, I think as long as one doesn't OVERCONSUME wheat in large quanities, then it isn't too bad. Personally, I'm not too big on bread anyways, and if i do buy bread, it's the oatmeal kind! :D ANd I hardly ever eat junk food, very rarely. :)

Oh, by the way, I never heard of "Soy Nice." Do you buy it at a health food store or what? I buy the Silk soy, maybe that's what you mean. I guess like everything else, you have to make your OWN decision on what YOU believe because of all the confusing info out there!!! :dizzy:  :( :D :)

You mean all those people in China are really sick from soy? Sorry, I live in a half Asian family. The only thing that I've noticed was poor teeth, but don't forget they didn't have cow's milk when they were children in China. They also didn't go to the dentists as much as we do here in the USA. They used to drink a glass of soy milk everyday, eat lots of different kinds of tofu, eat fresh cooked soy beans, and soy sauce everyday. They never had any problems. Sure if you have a medical condition like a thyroid problem, ask your doctor first. Otherwise, I say enjoy your soy milk. We still drink it occationally here, it's just that whole milk does taste better to the rest of my family. We also eat firm tofu, when we can find it for a good price. (Not that pre-packaged junk....The homemade stuff from the Chinese/health food grocers.) We also use dark soy sauce everyday in our cooking. You can find bad things about any food if you look hard enough.

I think that people try to make a controversy about everything. Hmm...all the bad things for us are dairy, wheat, soy, red meat, corn, bananas (yeah, I read that somewhere), and the list goes on. I eat all those things, except dairy. I'm very allergic and get pretty sick. I love me some ice cream sometimes though :0!!! I drink soy milk, the lowfat plain kind. It is pretty tasteless. I use soy protien shakes, eat soy hot dogs and I feel pretty darn good. I think it's up to you wether or not you want to consume it or not. It is your body and your choice. People will say anything if people are willing to hear it, and we all need something to talk about, right?! Good luck!

Do a search: Soy Danger. The problem is the method in which soy is processed in the USA.

okay that was really shocking.

so than what is a good source of calcium?

my friend told me that most cow milk has hormones in it, and is unpure.

I enjoy drinking soy milk and eating tofu. I have a case of 1-qt. cartons of soy milk that I keep at home and in the fridge at work. It's delicious. I read about soy danger as recommended, and I must attest that I have no problems with soy. I have no allergies of any type, and I don't have any problems digesting soy.

I eat a healthy diet, complete with fruits, vegetables, meat, milk, eggs, and I do not intentionally eat sugar, if I can help it. I have not eaten a drive-thru hamburger, fries, taco or burrito in at least 4 years.

I recall in 1966, our health teacher intoduced us to "Bac-o's", explaining that they were made from soy. I've enjoyed Bac-o's all my life, even eating them as a snack out of the jar.

Regarding soy affecting brain function, I do not believe one bit of that. Eastern Asian people live longer, healthier lives than almost any other group of people. They limit their caloric intake and eat soy.

I have a craving for a cup of soy milk, so off I go for a refreshing cold drink...

that stuff will kill you!

if you are predisposed to breast cancer it will make it flourish

if you are a man you may grow breasts

if you are a woman you will have a hard time losing weight, if you are trying to

the stuff is bad

IMO it is the way the soya beans are processed in the West that makes them toxic. In asian countries they ferment the soya for 2 - 3 years, here is is washed in an acid in aluminium tanks ( aluminium linked to alzheimers) then rinsed in an alkali solution. The choice is yours, for me soy is a no go and was before I had my thyroid problem.

suggestion to ALL: please google and use COMMON SENSE before using "studies" as absolute FACTS.

soybean and it's processed forms is NOT the perfect food for EVERYBODY. All fruits and vegetables contain flaveniods. Isoflavones are a form of phytoestrogen(behaves like estrogen, hence recommended for menapause). It mimics horomone, so it can affect the endocrine system- your thyroids.

Phytoestrogen is found in ALL NATURAL PLANT BASED PRPODUCTS, LIKE IN WHOLE GRAIN CEREALS, FLAX SEED and COFFEE BEANS (there goes your breakfast and omega3 supplements).

The fear is that since it affects the endocrine system, potentially it affects growth, fertility and make you a "girly man". What the studies don't show is:

a) dosage, quantity, frequency of intake. Soy sauce has very little isoflavone, for example, while soy vegge burger might contain higher levels.

b) MOST soybean grown in the west is GENETICALLY MODIFIED(so is wheat, corn, and rice, btw) Some will be ORGANIC, but doesn't matter because it's still GM. Does GM, fertilizer, soil make up affect the level of phytoestrogen?

If you're going to avoid soy simply because it contains phytoestrogen, wait till I tell you about another class of endocrine disruptor.......Xenoestrogens!! This synthetic chemical(chlorinated hydrocarbon) is found EVERYWHERE and will stay in your body fat for YEARS. It's commonly used as UV inhibitor in plastic(bisphenol A)-as in water bottle, food packing material. It's modified forms are found in canned foods, detergent, preservatives in shampoo, soap, lotions(check the bottle for methyl paraben, ethyl paraben, proply paraben, butyl paraben). Let's not forget the banned chemicals that still exist in our land, water and air: PCB’s (polycholrinated biphenyls) and DDE(metabolized DDT). It's still on your golf course, lawn, school, fish you catch, tuna and swordfish in last night's dinner, or that frozen burrito you threw in the microwave with the platic wrapper still on...hehe, welcome to the 21th Centry :jester:
