Has anyone tried the new orange juice with plant sterols that claims it lowers cholesterol? My friend who takes statins told me she started drinking the new orange juice and also started using the "no trans fats" margarine and she has lowered her cholesterol enough to decrease her statin dose by half. Now for me to say I am eating margarine is even a shock to me, but I did buy the H.... Wise one and it doesn't taste bad but when you use it on hot toast it seems to make the toast rather wet. The orange juice is very good. I guess I decided to try the juice because I don't want another pill to take and to drink juice with my meal is nice. Let us know if you have tried any of these and what results you get. :)

What is suppose to be in the OJ to make it lower your cholesterol? I swear, everytime I turn on tv I see a new ad for something that will lower it. Isn't OJ rather high in sugar, as I was told not to let hubby have much due to him being a type 2 diabetic?...........
Hubby got a news letter today, as we do evey month from the AARP, and they had a nice article in their regarding plant sterols. One thing they did say, as I have often said, is we should almost double our intake of veggies and fruits, as our soil has been so contaminated, we need extra. Of course with the prices of the stuff, we might have to rob a bank to afford all we should eat.... :D
My girlfriend uses that new margarine, think it begins with a B, she said it isn't too bad at all. I've also seen the price of that stuff..WHOA!! Geez, they want us to eat all this good stuff, but God forbid they should make it affordable. I really like Wendy's salads and fruit platter, and for a lil over 4.00, U can't buy the stuff in the store and make one for that price.
Have a good one, and CYL...

gardeninggal, JJ,
Those two (Benecol and Take Charge?) are sterol based margerines (sitosterol) and to my way of thinking are priced WAY out of line. I would pay $2...but I WON'T pay $6.
Give a look for something called SMART BEAT (not SMART BALANCE.) It costs as much as regular margerine but has NO saturated fats, NO trans-fats and only 20 calories per Tbsp. (as opposed to 80-100 for most other spreads.) It's major component are water and canola oil and that contributes a nice amount of Omega-3 oils in the form of ALA. The low calore count allows the eating of "butter" even on a strict diet.
It tastes rather nice too and comes in 2 - 8 ounce tubs for anywhere from $.99 to $1.49...usually $1.29.
Gardeningal...what do they charge for that Orange Juice and do you know how much sitosterol you get?

Lenin: The orange juice is M.....Maid, Heart Wise, not sure if I can name brands, it is in a 1/2 gal container and says it is 1gram per serving, which is an 8oz glass. It says to have 2 servings a day. Here in Minn. it cost me a little over $2. much like buying milk. I did get the Smart Balance and here it Cub Stores it cost $2.50 a tub. Will look for the brand you mentioned and see how much cheaper it is. :)

Sure you can name brands as long as you aren't SELLING it. You don't own an orange grove do you?:D:D:D
Gee, I just saw the Smart Blance at HALF of what you paid!
I'll scout the Minute Made but at first glance that seems like a lot of calories (a pint of OJ) just to get a gram of sterols, dosage to get a modest amount of cholesterol lowering seems around 2 grams a day or so.

"One problem with canola oil is that it has to be partially hydrogenated or refined before it is used commercially and consequently is a source of trans fatty acids; sometimes are very high levels. Another problem is that it is too unsaturated to be used exclusively in the diet; some of the undesirable effects caused by feeding canola can be rectified if the diet is made higher in saturated fatty acids. hunter,
Canola, like all oil is refined or nobody would BUY it. When it says canola oil (or corn soy) we expect a bottle of 100% as-stated oil, perfectly clear and free of contamination...that's REFINEMENT.
Liquid Canola oil is completely UNHYDROGENATED!
"TOO UNSATURATED"...that's truly a preposterous statement and really makes no sense except to someone peddling coconut oil or lard!
Mercola has long ago gone 'round the bend! :jester:
gardeningal,
I searched my HUGE Shop-Rite...they had several varieties of Minute Maid OJ...but no sterol blends.

Cold pressed extra virgin olive oil is not refined and is all I use. Careful not to overheat it.

Hi Lenin, yes I had a hard time finding it at first because Minuete Maid has so many but this one has a red strip below the name and on the red strip is the words Heart Wise. Perhaps your store has it but it is hard to spot but they will get it if people request it. I like the taste a lot and it does look a little different, more creamy and I think you would like it. Like all things it costs more

Hi Lenin, You are having a heck of a time finding that orange juice, I buy mine here in Minn. at the store called "Cub" It is more expensive then just frozen juice but it does have a long freshness date on the container and keeps well in the fridge. I have grown quite fond of the flavor. The margarine Smart Balance was $2.50 a lb tub which here in this dairy state is the same price for butter. I think the juice will become more popular and more stores will carry it.

Tropicana settles FTC charges: Tropicana will stop claiming that "Healthy Heart" orange juice will reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke, under a settlement with the FTC. The FTC had alleged that Tropicana mislead consumers with claims that drinking two to three glasses a day of its Healthy Heart brand orange juice would produce dramantic effects on blood pressure, cholesterol and homocysteine levels. Tropicana is prohibited from making similar health-related claims in the future unless they can be substantiated by scientific evidence.
Just read this in todays local paper....Don't know about Minute Maid??
