I'm getting ready to quit a two year 120 mg Oxycontin chewed habit. I have researched and done everything I can. I'm about to take the leap...Here is my question...I am currently taking 120 mg. of Oxy. I have 12 40 mg.'s left. Should I taper down to 60 mg for a week before C/T or just C/t I mean ultimately does tapering really help that much...will it make that much of a difference in w/d symptoms...please ANYTHING advice will help..Thak you all so much

Goddess is right. You do have a battle ahead of you! You have to be strong and the stronger you are, the easier it will be to get through it! I would recommend a 2 week Suboxone program if it is possible! That will prevent some serious w/d's from the oxy's. If you taper down, you still will feel some w/d's b/c your body is used to having that 120mgs/day!!! I hope this helps! I would look into an inpatient program! It will DEFINATELY help you with detoxing! GOOD LUCK :)

The best way is to take yourself to a detox. If this is not an option reply back and tell me exactly how many pills and dosage you have left. I hope by the time you read this your problem is already solved. If not reply back and let me know your status. Good luck!!

My addiction is to Lortab. I threw myself on the mercy of my doctor. He started my taper with one less pill than I usually took. He left me there for three days. I went in again, and he decreased by 1/2 pill. I go again on Tuesday and he will decrease me another 1/2 (I think).
Please see your doctor. They are sooo helpful. After all, they prescribed the medicine that began your addiction and to quote mine "that is why they are controlled substances. This is very common, and I will be happy to help you come off of them with a minimum of discomfort." He and his nurse and even the pharmacy is being very positive and helpful.
I am afraid for anyone to do this alone - everyone needs someone. I chose my medical professional, I suffer from depression and I felt at real risk for a suicide if I went through what I know withdrawal is like.
My thoughts and prayers are with you - remember, you have all the power in this situation. YOU can change your life. I know that we all feel powerless to those little pills, but in reality, we can choose to change. I hope you are successful, but I know that it will be very difficult; and no-one on this board will think less of you if it takes a few tries to be successful. We are ALL in the same boat!

please listen to me. i am a wife of an addict and my husband has only been clean for 4 days. tapering will do better for you than quitting cold turkey. i had to taper him off of 350 mg. of methadone which is more addictive than heroin. i am telling you no matter how you taper anything there is going to be withdrawl but by tapering it will be less severe. i have researched for hours in the last two years to find my husband help with no prevail especially with no insurance. check your local human services and ask them if they have funding in your county for detox. some places do. unfortunatly for us there is no funding so we have to do this ourselves. good luck and be strong and always remember "God only gives you what you can handle".
