View Full Version : Omega 3s - any thoughts/experiences?

I have 2 young boys who have no current diagnosis, however, share many of the biological problems associated within the autism spectrum.

They have many food intolerances, but of particular difficulty to overcome has been fats. These are not tolerated well - we have tried all sorts, ie. enzymes, lecithin, taurine, GLA, but still they have problems with tolerating the essential fats, ie. flax, hemp, even cod liver oil!

I understand that some people can have problems particularily with the land-based plant oils possibly due to the high alpha-linolenic acid content which may not convert to adequate amounts of EPA/DHA? - our own experience, particularily with flax oil resulted in sleeplessness and irritability - has anyone else experienced this in their children with flax/other oils?

My boys desperately need omega 3s but I am finding conflicting reports on whether to go for high EPA or DHA, general autistic advise seems to suggest EPA is more important, however much favour seems to be given to high DHA in children below age 5.

Has anybody got any suggestions or personal experiences (good or bad) of using omega 3 oils in their autistic children?

Many thanks.

hi there. i have been giving my son fish oil supplements since the age of 2. i believe these vitamins have helped him greatly. the most significant change i see with him is his abiilty to sit, focus and complete a task without frustration. i have conducted my own experiment a couple of times by taking him off and have noticed an increase in his frustration level. i give my son omega 3-6-9 junior by nordic naturals, and i also give him peachy keen arctic cod liver oil by the same company. they have a website but i purchase mine at a health food store. good luck.

I give my son Nordic Naturals ProEPA. The fish oil makes him more alert, bright-eyed and talkative. It also seems to keep his asthma under control without any need for any asthma medication.

I would go for the high EPA's.
