I was recently diagnosed with Type II diabetes. I need to get myself a glucometer, but would like a recommendation of something that is easy to use and accurate (and hopefully not too pricy).

DB1973 06-03-2005, 02:41 PM I was recently diagnosed with Type II diabetes. Marie55 06-03-2005, 03:10 PM Ask your doctor for a free glucometer. Sometimes they have a supply and give them to their new diabetes patients. I like the Accu-Chek Advantage with Comfort Curve Strips. Easy to use, the curve on strip makes getting blood sample on much easier. Have been using one for 5 years. blondy2061h 06-03-2005, 04:37 PM I love my Freestyle Flash. ladychecotah 06-04-2005, 08:12 AM My doctor sent me to a Diabetes Educator at a hospital near by. She gave me my first meter-a One Touch. I have sent bought the One Touch Ultra Smart (Lifescan.com). My insurance prescription pays for the test strips which are costly for all meters and it has a cable to hook up to my computer so I can download readings to keep and print out for the doctor. The One Touch Ultra Smart is about $100 at a pharmacy, but I got a brand new one on Ebay for $29.99. It reads with a small drop of blood and reads in 5 seconds. I really like that at work, because it doesn't take much time to see where I am at. whackedback 06-05-2005, 07:58 PM I have a One Touch Ultra and haven't had a problem with it yet. If you look along the edges of this forum, there are offers for free glucometers all over the place. The money is made with the test strips. Think about the auto makers giving you a free car, but you have to replace the tires every week, and they cost $250 each. :D My MD writes me a prescription for my test strips, so I get a container of 100 for about $17. If things are good, it will last a month. wb lindiana53 06-06-2005, 11:28 AM Be careful with some of the "drugstore" meters. I had two and found them to be highly inaccurate. I like the One touch Ultra, the Ascensia Contour, and the Freestyle. The strips are are expensive. There are some drugstores on the internet that have some good prices on strips if you don't have insurance and must pay for them yourself. Never pay for a meter. You can always find them free. |
