Hello to ALL,
Do any Bipolar people have sleep apnea ? If so, I need some HELP !!!
A couple of months ago, my Hubby was talking to my BPDoctor, and the
subject came up about him being worried about how bad I snore.
He suggested that I go to a Sleep Doctor, gave us the names of a few..,
and we picked one.
So, I have been to the Sleep Doctor, for a consultation and of course,
I took my Hubby with me, after all, how could I know about how I sleep....,
He showed the Doctor, being demonstrative, like my head goes back,
and I seem to be gasping for breath, and really struggling.
Also, I have waked myself up, snoring.
Well, that in itself pretty much summed up that I needed to go back, and
go to the Sleep CLinic, at the hospital, over night, and have my sleep
monitored.
I am getting a bit nervy about this, since tomorrow night is when I go to
spend the night !
My Hubby will be there, in another room.
Any advice would be appreciated...,
Thanks,
Gee Gee

Well, there is another issue that my wife does not have . Praise! However, this can be a real problem when you combine meds that make you sleepy and this issue.

From Gee Gee,
Hi ! MH,
I know, I have been told that sleep apnea can be a life threatening situation.
Like you said, this and combined meds., that make me sleep !
AND, I also have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, along with the EBVirus,
and Sjogrens.
I guess I am just in a mess.
Thanks so much for your reply, and I hope you have a nice weekend !

I have rapid cycling bi-polar and sleep apnea, along with a few other things. I think it's upto 15 diagnoses now (both mental and physical). The test for sleep apnea is nothing to be worried about. They just hook you up to some electrodes and monitor your breathing while you are sleeping. You'll be fine, especially with your hubby there.

Take Care,
GeeGeeYes, I have a CPAP. I've had it for two years. It's great. The first week or two were weird for me. I would take off the mask at night and not even realize it and stuff. Now they are doing a 30 day trial on me for an APAP machine as people's pressure changes up and down durnig the night in 90% of people. My insurance only paid for the CPAP at first because it's cheaper, but if this APAP machine works better then my doctor will write a "letter of medical necessity" and I will get this new APAP machine for good. :p

Hello ! vo, Been this way ALL DAY !
I thank you so much for your reply, and your information.
We got back from the hospital this morning....., left at 5:00am., and we
have an hours drive.
What a TRIP this was !
I think I did pretty good. I was glad my Hubby was in the room when the
nurse was hooking up all of the little electrobe thingy's.
(He was in another really nice room.)
I almost got the clos, a couple of times, but once I settled down,
I didn't get up in the middle of the night, which is unusual for me.
I should hear from my Doctor this week, to find out my results of my tests !
BTW, what is the difference in a ' CPAP machine ', and a ' APAP ' machine ?
Does this means you have progressed in your sleep apnea ?
It's so nice to have insurance, huh ? We have great insurance, a lot of it
is Because my DH works for the US Postal Service !
You say that you will have the ' APAP machine for good ' ? Does this mean
that there is no cure for sleep apnea.., but this is the treatment ?
I hope everything goes well for you, and I will be in touch, soon I hope...,
Take Care..., ;)

Hi Gee-Gee,
I've had sleep apnea since I was a kid - never bothered me much until one night Carol thought I had died in my sleep...!!! (forgot to mention it too her...!!!) :nono:
Anyway, I have a FANTASTIC suggestion for the snoring, it REALLY works...
'Breathe Right Nasal Strips' - made in Minn by a company called CNS Inc.
TRUST ME - they REALLY work... ;)
Take care, :p

Hey ! Hedge,
THANKS, for your reply and your info., I will look for these.
I did use one kind, a while back. My experience was that part of my
skin riped off my nose when I took the **** things OFF !
AND, it took some time for my nose to get back to NOT being flat as a flitter.
Maybe this is different !
My GF has the CPAP machine, did you ever do this ?
She was living with her Mom at the time, who is in the early stages of Deminthia (sp).
I told her that her Mama was going to wake up in the night, and think
she flew in from another planet, with all of that GEAR she has on !LOL.
Hedge, I will tell you about my TRIP to the Sleep Clinic ASAP !
Right now, my Hubby is waiting for me to go on one of our favorite excursions,
Our favorite Casino !
It's really nice, and right on the infamous Mississippi River !
Hope we win the JACKPOT !!! Cross your fingers.., Okay ?
You Take Care..., ;)

Hi ! Hedge,
I guess you already read my reply to vo5, about my trip to the Sleep Clinic..,
I still don't know the results yet. I will keep you posted.
Yeah, we went to our favorite Casino, but did NOT hit the jackpot.
We did have a nice time though.
If you have anymore tips about sleep apnea, send it on to me, okay ?

Yeah, I got clausterphobic too because I have panic disorder too, glad to hear you settled down. If you do have sleep apnea, the mask may make you clausterphobic too for a week or two, but hang in there, the sleep is definately worth it.
I should hear from my Doctor this week, to find out my results of my tests! That's pretty quick. The whole process for mine took a month. Then it was another two weeks to get my machine.
BTW, what is the difference in a ' CPAP machine ', and a ' APAP ' machine ?There are CPAP's, Bi-Pap's, and APAP's. The CPAP stays at a constant pressure all the time, the Bi-pap switches from a low pressure to a high pressure every five minutes all night long, and an APAP automatically senses how much pressure you need all night long.
Does this means you have progressed in your sleep apnea ?I don't know. I've gained another 25 pounds. Last year I lost 35. Since weight often plays a part in the pressure a person needs I think my doc has decided that an automatic sensing machine would be better for me since my weight fluctuates so much. With the CPAP I would have to go back and do sleep studies over and over each time I had trouble sleeping. I had three sleep studies last year and they are expensive here.
It's so nice to have insurance, huh ? We have great insurance, a lot of it is Because my DH works for the US Postal Service !Yes. My insurance paid 80% of each of the $1,500 sleep studies, but I had to pay %20 each time I went.
You say that you will have the ' APAP machine for good ' ? Does this mean that there is no cure for sleep apnea.., but this is the treatment ? Yes and no. The only "cure" is a tracheostemy, but it is not recommended because of the rate of infection. The APAP, CPAP, or Bi-Pap are the best treatments. Some people have surgery on the inside of their throats to remove tissue, but it only works for some people. I think the rate is 50/50. Since I know 5 people it didn't work on (and some had problems) and only 1 person did it work for, I'm sticking with the machine.
I hope everything goes well for you, and I will be in touch, soon I hope...,Take Care..., ;)
Gee Gee :yawn:You take care too Gee Gee. Hope you get some rest soon!

Hi ! Vo,
Thanks for your GREAT reply !
One thing I thought of, that I didn't know if I expressed to you or not...,
My BPDoctor has told me that he thinks when I get this sleep disorder,
(whatever it is), going much better, that I may be able to decrease some
of my BP meds., so I am really excited about this,
as I have to take sooo many !
You know, you are probably right......, I really don't remember when I will
get my results of my tests back. I am going to look up my info., about this.
Yep ! I knew about the weight gain deal, and I know I need to loose about
twenty pounds.
YES ! I have heard about those surgeries......., Duuuuuuuuh I don't think so !
I truly Thank You, for all of your information. You know how it goes when
we talk to someone who has been through the same situations,
it automatically makes us feel better.
I don't know where you are, but I am seeing on the News, that a
Hurricane is headed for the Gulf Coast........, that's where I am !
I have great respect for weather, after being a survivor of one Hurricane,
and more than one Tornado...,
Take Care, and let me hear from you......, K ?

PS. VO, I wanted to say that in one way, I thought as my BPDoctor did, that if
I did have ' sleep apnea ', it could be a good way of getting off of some of my
medications.
I think we did talk about this, didn't we ?
Well, so much for that..., I can only hope for something else to come along,
since I do have some health issues going on.
Take Care..,
