AnnabelleC 03-23-2001, 01:34 PM HI, a few people replied to me that it may be better to consider other options for acne scars. so I researched and I decided that microdermabrasion MAY be more effective than lasers in removing acne scars as it slowly and progressively sands the skin down to a level that evens it out with the scars. I am very thankful to those that helped me, as I am glad I did not take the big risk to try laser while it may not even be necessary.
However, I would like some advice from anyone who has tried this, how many sessions were needed and how much of an improvement was seen? Also, is it necessary to do this treatment along with another method for mild/moderate acne scars?
Thank you so much
starr 03-24-2001, 12:04 PM All I can tell you is this: I am going for microdermabrasion (parisian peel), first treatment March 27. I'm going for 7 treatments, $780. I'm 42, never had acne. I have a scar from a spider bite, fine lines and wrinkles, especially around my mouth from smoking, and those 2 forehead lines. I'm not ready for laser on my lips. This is supposedly going to: Make skin softer, rejuvinate sun damage, great for pimple and acne scars, firm skin, take away spots etc. I'm very excited! I'll keep you informed! Wendy
hi,
i had microdermabrasion done after considering laser, but opted out because of the recovery time needed for lasers...i have had just one session done so far for the acne scars and i already see an improvement, but for most people i was told that its normally after 3-4 sessions. i'm having it done weekly for 10 weeks then should be able to reduce the number times i need to have it done...hope this helps. Take a look at the acne postings..i decided to have it done after reading Philasers posting and looking at his before and after pics.
Best of Luk with it.
yaz, for microdermabrasion, you should wait at least two weeks between treatments. doing it again so soon afterward may only be doing yourself a disservice.
might want to look into glycolic acid peels today. i just had one today, and overall, i'm more pleased than i was with microdermabrasion so far.
hi,
Thanks for the advice Ryan, i will look into glycolic peels too and giv that a go...did u notice a difference right away and how many peels are required for a good result ?
thanks
AnnabelleC 03-30-2001, 09:54 AM Hi, so far I have had two treatments of microdermabrasion and I can't say I see any results, I did not however expect to see results anyway, but I have noticed that I am breaking out more after every session. My breakouts had stopped for a while and now I am getting small pimples on my forehead which has never really broken out before. I assume that the exfoliation is cleansing my skin. Has anyone had this effect from microdermabrasion?
starr 03-30-2001, 12:56 PM Hello everyone, had my first treatment of MD. Actually, my skin is feeling really soft, I've noticed that the few blackheads I have came up to the surface. I noticed that i looked younger, I'm, not kidding! I'm 42.My skin was always nice, never had acne. Just doing it to get rid of sundamage and to rejuvinate. I'll keep you all posted! Wendy
AnnabelleC 04-02-2001, 12:25 PM Hi Wendy, I am scheduled for my third session tomorrow, I do see a lot iof improvements in my pore size, but not much in my scars. I am glad that you are seeing improvements, can you tell me what kind of MD you are having, there are so many different tyes, my doctor uses sodium chloride (salt) crystals and utilizes the positive pressure system rather that the vacuum, I am not sure of the difference.
Daniela T 04-24-2001, 02:52 AM Hi everyone! I just hope all of you getting microdermabrasion done will keep those of us about to embark on this posted from time to time.
I have light to moderate scarring caused by acne that I want to improve very badly. From what I understand from those who have success with this procedure lies in the skill of the one administering treatment. A highly trained aesthetician will work with you and go deeply to help correct flaws over time. And not everyone responds the same....so hang in there, Annabelle! Pleae let us know how you are progressing!
I am not familiar with the salt that Annabelle is using but rather the aluminum crystals with the vacuum sensation. I am interested in hearing from anyone out there who has experienced the latter kind.
I hope this is an answer to my skin problem which is almost debilitating at times. Since it is less invasive than laser and other methods, I figure this is the way to start.
Best wishes to all.....

The salt is sodium chloride. After four sessions, I decided to go for the Parisian Peel, the aluminum crystals (I have only done one so far, but scheduled for another in two days). I will definately let you know how much of an improvement I see.
May I ask if your scars are indentations/depressed scars or are they just red marks? I have managed to eliminate most of my red marks through peels, but my indented scars REALLY bother me. Microdermabrasion does not seem to have a drastic effect on some and yet others see a total improvement, but you are right it does depend on the person performing the microdermabrasion and also on the client's skin. My friend has had about 9 treatments called a diamond peel, and it has ELIMINATED all her depressed scars and her's were a lot deeper than mine. So, I have come to realize that everyone is different in terms of results. But I will keep you posted.
Daniela T 04-25-2001, 08:18 PM Hi Annabelle -
Thanks for posting and please keep me posted on what you think about alum crystals vs. the other sodium chloride.
The scarring is light to moderate and I can cover it in most areas with Dermablend and also Retin A seems to help - Dermablend somehow is thick enough to get into the crevices and Retin A stretches the skin so it looks about 30-40% better....but it doesn't do anything to correct the problem, just cover it. They are the indented kind that are flat, not too terribly deep, but noticeable, especially very close up. One scar is deeper than the others. I am very, very self-conscious about it and it affects me very negatively in a lot of ways.
I am opting to do the microdermabrasion but still do not know who to choose to do this. I understand from talking to someone else about this problem who has skin similar to mine that it took about 10 treatments before she was like "wow, this is working really, really well." The key was stimulating regrowth of collagen in her opinion.
Interestingly, I also read it is good to massage the scarred areas vigorously for several minutes a day. The circulation of the blood will help rebuild collagen and plump up the skin. Try this, too, I think it has helped me somewhat.
How often do you have your treatments? Hope and pray it is going very well for you and that you get the results you are looking for.
Daniela
AnnabelleC 04-26-2001, 12:56 PM Daniela,
Sorry before to refer to you as Daniel (I don't what was wrong with me?) I have so far had six sessions, two with the aluminum oxide, my friend also says it takes quite a while to get results. Yes, I do think that massaging the scars also help, I try doing it with a facial cleanser scrub. I was also recommended to use topical Vitamin C, the vitamin C is supposed to help stimulate collagen growth also and plump up the scars, I use it at night though, and only for about two weeks now, but it really does plump up the skin. My doctor says a lot of women apply topical vitamin C to wrinkles to plump it up and it works well in stimulating collagen growth, so he recommended I use it for scars also.
I would love to try the Retin A, but even the lower strenghts makes my skin peel and is EXTREMELY drying.
I will let you know of my results. I really understand how you feel about your scars, I have been trying with mine also.
hi,
can any1 let me know where i can get information on the parisian peel and dimaond peel from the web, thank u
AnnabelleC 04-30-2001, 10:44 AM Yaz,
There are a lot of information on the parisian peel on the web, just go to any search engine and you can find information, I think they also have a website. however, I have not been able to find a lot of info on the diamond peel. I was told by my doctor that they are both pretty much the same and will give the same results, it depends on the person giving the treatment and the type of skin you have. i think though, that it takes a long, long time to see great improvements.
