Can anyone advice me how to treat my aching liver. I have been told I have a fatty liver after having a scan a few months ago and have been refered to a gastro specialist and am waiting for an appointment. I am very concerned with what is happening to me as the aching periods seem to be more often lately. I'm concerned if I take an anti inflamitaries that they will cause more damage to my liver. Any help would be welcome.

Hi taffylass--you're right any anti-inflam meds will raise your liver enzymes and not be good for your liver right now. I'd wait until you see the gastro before taking anything. I'm not sure if it should ache from fatty liver or not--everyone is different, and mine didn't ache. This is the place to come--a lot of great ppl w/good info for you. There's a poster here "TheHappyMan" who's really well-versed in the liver, any supplements you can take, pretty much anything about it. He's good with lab results too!! If the ache gets too bad before your gastro appt you may want to call your doc back--you really don't want to take anything that will irritate it before then.
oh yea--did they check for gallstones? just wondering.
Hope this helps...

Have you had any tests on your gallbladder? That can cause pain in that area. Look into that and at least rule that out because it is a likely possibility it could be malfunctioning with little or no stones...that's what happened to me.

Thanks for your helpful advice. The scan I had in February showed no liver? stones, my gall blader couldn't be seen and that my liver was coarse whatever that means. My last liver function showed only a raised alt of 50. Apart from the ache in my liver and upset stomach which has been ongoing for about 5 years now I don't actually feel ill as such. BUT I am very worried as there are many questions I want to ask but didn't think of when I saw the last consultant. Hopefully I will get my appointment with the gasto consultant any day now and I will be able to put my mind at rest I hope.

Happyelf, you are just too kind !!!!!! :) I try to share when I can. And taffylass, you may not have any liver problems at all..... One good sign is that your enzymes are resonably normal....... When someone has liver problems there are usually a number of varied symptoms, but an ache "in the liver" is not one commonly reported.
More than likley you have some kind of digestive irritation, that would be my guess. Your best news was your blood test. Try not to worry, nerves can cause imaginary aches and pains, - thats really true...... your gastro "consultant" will help straighten things out. Good Luck there. :) :) :)

fatty liver has three main causes, insulin resistance, obesity, and type 2 diabetes.... weight management is important in controlling the illness... you must be careful to not take vitamins absorbed in the liver, many herbal and vitamin remedies that may work for some conditions will not be helpful and can possibly hurt someone with your condition. weight loss is one of the major ways to control this illness... talk to your doctor before getting involved in any over the counter liver cleansing programs, as many of these minerals and herbs can be toxic to people with cirrhhotic livers...... see a hepatologist!!
if you have a weight problem or diabetes you will probably be advised to get those under control through diet and exercise, or possibly surgery!

Thanks everyone for your postings. My origional specialist said I have a liver problem, that it is coarse, fatty, but I have no stones. The only plus factor is I havnt been put down as an urgent case and my 13 weeks wait for gastro specailist is almost up so should get an appointment any day. My feeling is that I have NASH.

Taffylass;
Good luck to you when you see your spec. I hope it goes well. 13 wks is a long time to wait I know, but you're right, that is a GOOD sign. If it was thought to be more severe, you would have been in right away. I know it's hard not to worry too much,esp when you're in limbo waiting to see your dr. Looks like you've done your research so I won't bore you w/the ins and outs. of fatty liver...:-) Just remeber it's rare that it will cause severe liver damage, because the inflamation is not severe like w/alcoholic. The liver has amazing regenerative powers--I was in total liver failure, placed at the top of the transplant list, and a few days later my #'s began to trend back down. After a week or so I ended up being taken off the list and sent home after that. My #'s were really high-and when they sent me home they were in the 1000 range-and 4days later when I had labs done they were 500/800. Take care and let us know how it goes at the dr.!! Gina

My liver (coarse and fatty) is still aching almost every day now and I'm still waiting foir the gastro specialist appointment as the clinic is overloaded there is a delay, but I have told I am only routine. My liver profile showed abnormal ALT of 36 (last time was 50) - others normal. Can anyone advise me on long tremm prospects. PS I have lost over a stone since February but still have a long way to go.

Check out Dr Sandra Cabot's liver cleansing diet. It works brilliantly, and she has stacks of liver information.

My GP/Dietition/Liver Specialst all say that a fatty liver shouldn't acahe. I have a dull/sharp type a pain from my right ribs and also to the left from time to time and I have been told a couple times by my GP that's it's a traped nerve.

Should I be pleased!! Have just seen the gastro specialist (well his understudy) and was told just fatty liver. I asked about the 'coarse' bit that the last specialist mentioned as was told thats just the surface of the liver. I asked why my liver hurts all the time now and I had the impression that she thought livers don't hurt and that it may be something else. Now I know my body, and I know my liver aches and I can feel it enlarged as I hate any clothing around my rib area which is very uncomfortable. The specialist said it wasnt enlarged when I lay down to be examined (I have lost 1 half stones but still overweight!). So am I imaginging this uncomfortable feeling near by right rib!! I feel there is something more to it but who am I to say so - you have to have faith in your doctor don't you!!
