To Whom It May Concern

My name is ( - no real names please - ); I was diagnosed with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia in April 2000. I received a bone marrow transplant for CML in Dec. 2000 at the UAB, Birmingham. I am glad to say that all is now well. When I attended my first visit at UAB, I met with Dr. Donna Salzman. Upon taking my history, she was immediately under the supposition that my CML stemmed from my serving in the Gulf War in 1990/1991.

I filed a claim for with the Veterans Administration about a year ago for service connected leukemia, my claim was denied due to the fact that the disease was not active within six months of my separation from the Air Force (which was in July 1996). I was diagnosed in April 2000. I now have an appeal pending; my hearing appointment with the Veterans Decision Review Officer is August 3rd.

I was exposed to many dangerous chemicals in Desert Storm, including, but not limited to…. scuds blowing up over head, the 700 oil wells burning out of control, petrochemical agents, microwaves, PD-680 (which is a powerful cleaning compound used in cleaning air craft parts), hydrazine (which was used to power a jet engine), inoculations such as the anthrax vaccinations and botulism vaccinations, the pyridostigmine bromide pills I took in case I was exposed to chemical and biological warfare agents, a plume of nerve gas which may have affected 350,000 Gulf War volunteers leishmaniasis {sand flies),the pesticides that were sprayed all around me, theJP-8 jet fuel, the exhaust from hundreds of fighter jets all around me, the depleted uranium ammo I loaded on the A-10 thunderbolt attack jet. There were time the A-10s gun would jam and I was tasked to remove the gun system, 30mm rounds where torn all apart in the gun bay, had I known about the effects of depleted uranium I would have took precautions. We where never told about the dangers of DU. These are just the chemicals that I am currently aware of. I also was on the highway of death.

As a result of my in depth research on this matter, I also believe that my CML could very possibly be a direct result of the Gulf War, however
providing evidence to the VA that my leukemia was indeed a result of the Gulf war is a difficult process. Basically, all that I have to prove is that to the VA is that my CML could “POSSIBLY” be a result of the War. With all this being said, I am in desperate need of information…..My question is this….Can leukemia lie dormant in a persons system? If yes, how long can the disease lie dormant? Do the previously stated chemicals have delayed or latent effects? And, what can actually trigger the disease to become ACTIVE??? Or is the ‘trigger’ of this disease simply unknown??? Any information you can provide me with will be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you in advance for you assistance in this matter.

Sincerely,
( - no real names or contact information - )
