View Full Version : muscle spasms - neurological or stress-related??

I don't want to bother anyone but I need some quick advice to see if anyone has ever been experiencing what I am going through. I am a considerably healthy twenty-one year old male: I don't drink, smoke, or do any kind of drugs! I mean, I don't even drink caffeine. Well, earlier this year I started having random muscle spasms throughout my body and I did not think much of them until they became more frequent. I was really concerned when the muscle in my arm near my elbow kept spasming for days without stopping, so I went to see a doctor right away.

The first doctor I went to put me on Flexeril, a muscle relaxant, and said that I was probably just stressed out and needed to rest, which should have made the spasms stop. Well, I waited a couple weeks and they did not go away so I went to another doctor. He said it was probably my thyroid and took some blood, but the tests said there was nothing wrong. So I went to a different doctor and suggested that it was probably something neurological, but tested my blood again for a magnesium defficiency and that came out fine.

So I went to a real neurologist who did these really painful tests to check my muscle and nerve movements, and he concluded that it was probably stress and some condition that sounded like "facetious" (I have NO idea what he was talking about??) but he put me on Klonopin and said that I should just take it easy and the muscle spasms should go away on their own, but it could be a long time before that happens.

So my ultimate question is how many people have had muscle and nerve problems and not have it be "brain" related?? I was paranoid that I had a brain tumor but the dr. said that since I did not have any headaches that I probably did not. I get "dizzy" feelings sometimes and sometimes my muscles just get really weak. The spasms are still not going away and I just don't know what to do anymore. Can anyone relate to this problem??

Any help would be greatly appreaciated!

It could very well be coming from the area of your spine. You could have a disc herniation(they don't always present with pain, sometimes they can start with wierd neuro symptoms)or a bone spur that is just irritating a nerve in the c spine. There is also a more obscure possibility of some sort of lesion (not cancer) that developed in or around the cord.I have what is called a cavernous hemangioma that was lurking inside my cord, probably since birth that happened to show up on an MRI i had to have done for a herniated disc.it is basically just a glob of blood vessels that formed at the c 7 t 1 level of my cord. There are just so many possible suspects that could be going on there inside the spinal cord and surrounding areas.I really do think that since you are having no luck in finding the reason yet that having an MRI done on the C and upper T spine would be the next step.Trust me when I say that you just have no idea just what is going on inside your body unless you actually look inside. This is just a possibility for you to look into in your quest for the cause of your problem.Good luck, and please keep me posted.Marcia

Hey just read your post! I have muscle spasms in my legs and muscle twitches all over my body. My legs get stiff and weak, I fall alot which sucks! They still haven't figured out what it is but they think it might be a spinal disease of some sort. They tried putting me on so many medications but nothing works. Just wondering have you had a spinal tap, cat scan or a mri? Have they ruled out any tumors or herniated disc? Flexeril was the first medication I ever got and they told me I was stressed out. Then after switching neurologist they confirmed it was not stress they feel it is something in my spine causing the spasms. So always get second opinions!!!! Try to rule out everything!! Hope your doing good!! Keep your head up I know it can be fustrating. I am 28 and a new mom just trying to stay focused and not to get depressed!!
take care

Your spasms may be neurological and stress related.

At a time when I was very stressed I started to get these whole-body convulsions, always when I was falling asleep and the brain gave up control over the muscles.
Doctor said it was stress, and put me on Ativan for 5 days.
I was good after the first pill.

feelbad- answer your q.
I have had a mri, spinal tap,cat scan and alot of blood test and some neuro test. I have noticed it acts up worse (very stiff legs) in stressed situations but I can't understand why I never can run or do anything fast even when not stressed. I can't even go down stairs without holding on to the rail very carefully and slow. One doctor thought it was stress but 2 specialist insisted that it is not stress and that it is more of a spinal problem but yet they can't figure it out. Just frustrated and want to get back to normal!!!

Hello, I know exactly what you are talking about. I have been going through them since December. They are called fasciculations. I get them all over my body....some are small and some are big. Have a MRI on your brain done. They could be just benign involuntary muscle movements my neuro told me. He did an muscle nerve test done like you were talking about. I had movement in 3 out of 4 limbs. Still too early for a diagnosis of muscle disease. My vitamin B12 was very low. Have that checked out too. Hope this helps. You are young, probably stress but best to have all points checked out.
