Hi everybody,
ive been using celexa(citalophram)for a few months.but after using it a little while i had some changes in my mood(a lot of joy and laughing when theres no reason and moving,i mean like a manic episode)doctor said it is a side effect of the med(celexa)and he gave me risperdal which is used for psychosis.and that is what wonders me you know as a person who likes to learn,i wonder if anybody here who has ocd uses an antipsychotic drug.AND WHY!i think my doc gave it to me for i have problems on thinking,he had thought i might have schiz before.but decided i had not.
Thanks in advance.
take care all of you.

I dont like antipsychotics for your problems and would be asking doc to try another antidepressant of a different type to celexa

Sometimes in OCD an antipsychotic is used when the patient has a hard time distinguishing reality from what is not real.
See, usually in OCD the person knows really well that what he or she is afraid of is not rational, but just can't stop the thoughts anyway. That is what distinguishes OCD from a psychosis where the person will really believe the delusions and be convinced by them.
However, sometimes an OCD person will be NEAR delusional and really not quite be sure if the fears are irrational or not.
One psychiatrist suggested taking an antipsychotic to me before because he felt I wasn't really able to make that distinction between reality and un-reality anymore. He wasn't right though, in my opinion. He was weird anyway! And I never took an antipsychotic.

It seems in your case the risperdal is not used because of that, but because of your (hypo)manic reaction to the celexa.

I take risperdal and find it helps so much more. my psych isnt quite sure yet if i am psychotic or just really neurotic. but also ive been on Zyprexa (olanzapine) and Seroquel (Quetiapine) i find that my combination of effexor and risperdal is good in that it helps my anxiety and my thinking problems with reality, paranoia etc. i find he treats me as my symptoms evolve, effexor elimitated some of the depression and anxiety but too made me very sensitive to emotions and thoughts, so risperdal takes the edge off my mind. i bet it was for the hypomanic part just so ud be safe in reality where u can still handle your ocd. good luck

Hi,thanks for the replies!
I am ok mostly, but some thoughts have come again because of stress i think.usually at night(while my eyes are shut)it seems like everything is unreal and i am mistaken ,for a while.it annoys me but not like a year before it was too worse.my doctor once told me i am not able to understand real from imaginary.he gave me risperdal instead of increasing celexa, for the hipomania.
