Had a talk with my doctor yesterday about my cholesterol , something I had dreaded because when I had such a bad experience with Lipitor and Lovastatin I had said " I won't take any statins". He had said at the time "we will talk about that at your next visit". Well guess what, he asked me what I was doing about the cholesterol and I told him I was taking fish oil and taking Flush-free Niacin Hexanicotinate and surprise!!! he said good. In fact he said the there is a resurgence of Nician use. He said they used it for years with good results and when statins came on the scene they got pushed aside but now he said he is prescribing Niacin on the the adverage of 4 or 5 patients a week. I am to up my intake and see him in 3 months. I have been taking only about 320mg right now but will increase it. I don't have any niacin flush and I don't know if this is a result of the fish oil or even the niacin but my blood pressure was the lowest in quite a long while. I went home so happy and encouraged. :D :D :D

Gardeninggal,

Well, congratulations! It looks like you have a sensible doctor! That certainly is refreshing to hear. Far too many doctors today are statin crazy, with many people ending up with a multitude of problems as a result. I've already heard quite a number of horror stories about statins on this board. So, just stay the course. I think you've got a good doctor. Good Luck!

Gardingal,

If you do well on Niacin you have my deepest blessings. :)

My doc tried me on Niacin for about 2 months and my Cholesterol actually went UP!
And I had some really funky side affects like shaking and loss of sleep.

Uff-Da!

Glad to hear you have an understanding doctor. I hope you'll do well on it. I've been on niacin now for about 18 months, and so far, so good. If the flush-free works well for you, I just might change to that myself. So far I have been on the sustained-release.
