Hi all
My 26 year old daughter underwent a stress test last week and now her dr. wants to send her to a heart specialist. He asked her if heart problems ran through our family. None on my side so I called ex (first time in 10 years).
Now I'm worried.
Both of his parents died of heart failure and he had a heart attack 5 months ago. He also mentioned being dx'd a year ago with a muscle disease called Myacondal DNA. I'm spelling it like it sounds which is obviously wrong because I can't find any info on the internet. He said it was an inherited thing that is passed through the mother.
Is anyone familiar with this? I need to educate myself so I can explain it to my daughter. Bad enough I have to tell her that her paternal side of the family is chuck ful of heart problems.
thanks
Brenda

Hi the only thing I know that sounds like that is mitochondrial DNA, which basically is the DNA which is passed from generation to generation by the females. It isn't a disease, though..just DNA.

There are diseases that arise from mutations in the mitochondrial DNA. This is no doubt what he meant. They are inherited maternally only, so your ex could not have passed it to your daughter. So don't worry. But if you're curious anyway, try doing a search on "Mitochondrial Encephalomyopathy". That's one mitochondrial DNA disease (there are others though.)

Thank you so much for your replies.
Sorrel2 you have eased my mind, I will check it out so I can explain this to my daughter. So did it end with his mother or do the girls (his sisters) also get it and pass it on?
Now fingers crossed there are no heart problems for us to worry about. It is taking FOREVER for the 24th (heart spec. appt.) to arrive!
