i havent been tested for about a year and i was thinkin of doing it again. im kinda worried cuz i found some suspicious looking stuff in my b/f's email account.
my university health center offers free HIV testing using orasure. has anyone been tested by that? how does it work? is it reliable?
also how long would it take for a test to come back positive? the last time i had sex with my b/f was like about a month ago...would it be worth it to test yet?

I was tested about 10 months ago with Orasure. The test is taken without any blood. It is placed in between your gum and cheek in your mouth for (I think) 3 minutes. I was told at my health department that Orasure will detect HIV antibodies after 28 days from exposure. It took about 2 1/2 weeks for my results (negative :) ). It's been approved for use so I trust it to be very reliable.

great :) thanks! 28 days? that works out perfect! it will be nice not to be pricked by a needle!
if u eat or drink anything too soon before will that affect anything?
ugh, waiting 2 1/2 weeks for results will suck!

I just went to the Orasure website to look up some info. It does say it is 97.7% accurate in high risk people and 99.6% accurate in low risk people so I would feel confident in using this test. According to what I read, eating, drinking or meds wont affect the test.

Notice when you eat how you're food is held in between you're cheek and teeth .
It is a natural and also an involantary reflex .
And here's why ...........
You're food rubs and rolls all around the inside of you're cheek stimulating tiny pores that release antibodies into the food you're chewing as well as acids and natural antibacterial and antiviral chemicals you help destroy and give you're immune a jump on clearing out and foreign invaders that may try to enter through the mouth .
The orasure method of testing collects the antibodies from the cheek and uses an ( ELISA ) test to look for any antibodies for hiv .
It is very accurate and hey ( you don't even need to have blood drawn )
In good health ...........

thanks for all of ur help! i dont feel like im high risk and i dont participate in anything i would think is high risk behavior, so i should be good. for the past few years i just kinda like to be tested like once a year. especially if i have a new partner. i think i may bring this up to my b/f and see if he wants to go too. if i can think of a way without sounding accusing or something since we have had unprotected sex a couple of times. i just think it would be a good idea! thanks again!

Well, just let him know the facts. He shouldn't get angry or upset because you're taking control of your sexual health. Any man that gets angry should be looked at a little more closley. It would be a great idea for the two of you to go together!
