View Full Version : Weight loss in toddler?

I took my DS to the doc before we left for vacation b/c he'd had a cold and wanted to make sure he didn't have an ear infection. Well, he didn't but he HAD lost two pounds since his 18 month well baby and had the docs freaking out. He's now in the 90% for height and the 25% for weight. He has tons of energy, but doesn't always eat well. But he seems entirely too active to have a nutritional deficiency. He'll be 2 in July.

Anyway, they are talking about doing this battery of bloodwork at his 2 yr well baby, BUT, I talked to my MIL this week who said DH did the SAME thing when he was a toddler. His peds put him through all these tests b/c he had lost a bit and couldn't gain any weight. They were all negative, including hyperthyroidsm, which is one of the worries they had for Cal, except it's usually genetic..... They had him on milkshake diets and he still didn't gain. They were ready to send him to a premier medical university when MIL nipped it in the bud. DH to this day is SUPER healthy, atheletic, and skinny. He still weighs about 150 and is 5'9. And this is the most he's ever weighed.

So, should I put him through all the tests? Or just let it ride for a while? He's bright eyed,super-active, and his hair and skin are all thick, glowing and healthy. I just can't see getting all freaked out over this considering heredity. My brother is 6'5 175 and I was 5'8 125 pre pg. We were both SUPER skinny toddlers and kids with nasty bones sticking out. LOL. What do you think????? Help?

my daughter went through weight loss, my friends daugther is now going through that, both around 2 at the time. My daughter goes to a pediatrician and weight loss of even like 3-4 pounds is ok as long as there isn't any other major syptoms going on. I freaked at first but it's normal. My daughter is now going on 3 1/2 and has lost weight but she grew taller. They burn alot of energy around that age too then again around 3 - 3 1/2:)
So no worries:) I'd ride it out:)
Good luck:)

My oldest was more than 100% for length and less than 0% for weight. Can you picture it LOL. He also lost a lot of weight between 15 and 18 months BUT my pediatrician just told me that he would only get worried if I was worried. And I wasn't. Both me and DH were very skinny kids so...
He is now a very healthy 10year old with the right weight etc.
If it is only hyperthyroidism they are worried about: to rule that out would be one simple bloodtest.
I wouldn't try and fix something that doesn't seem broken at all!

Is he drinking too much juice and milk? I have to give my toddler milk and juice after he eats or else he wont be hungry. I was told many kids this age can start to lose weight due to this problem. I think if he is acting happy and healthy and is eating then you shouldnt worry. If hes refusing to eat all together then there is a problem. Good luck.

Honestly, I would ask the doctor to do the blood work .. better safe than sorry is all I have to say. I would rather put my daughter through a quick poke for a blood test than have her be sick.
