I think I have been on lithium for about 2 1/2-3 months now and I am just noticing a slight weight gain - LIKE 5LBS! Which is a ton to me. I think I am pretty much eating the same way. I guess my question is that if it caused weight gain for you, was it right away or did it take a little bit. Like I said, I never noticed a problem until the past couple weeks.

Thank you so much for your input!

yupyup. i've gained 25-30 lbs in the 3 years i've been on lith...but i was underweight to begin with. i went from a size 0 to a size 8...but i don't mind buying bigger pants if it means my mind is intact. :)

This is my biggest fear, having just started Lith, I can't afford to gain
any more weight. Being a big guy to begin with, I don't want to turn into a huge guy.

I am trying to combat it, by changing all my drinks to water, I figured that mabye people drink more soda or lemonade, because it makes you thirsty
and the extra calories add. By drinking water, I hope to quell that effect.

But we will see, also watching my portions, but I noticed I am hungrier and seem to want more than I did before.

Hmmm they should give ya and appetite surpressant when they give you this stuff LOL

thanks for your replies.

I don't see pdoc until the 22nd and I certainly will bring it up. I think they will weigh me anyhow, so they will know.

I am not sure that I prefer my mind intact over my body - lol!
I cannot ever imagine being size 0.

I also try to drink lots of water, but I am noticing now that the weight issue , which has always been a MAJOR focus for me , is now becoming just a little not so big a deal, BUT I think it should be because it always has been. I am so f-ed up thinking wise.

Anyhow, thank you all, I am hoping for some answers or trades from pdoc. Seems like a long ways away when lbs are waiting to accumulate.

Hi, I too have been on lithium for a similar timespan, and have gained a bit of weight too. I'm in a similar situation to justdave4now-I already need to lose weight, I don't want to get to the point of really looking roly-poly!! Now it's been about 2 months, and I haven't gained weight drastically, just enough to notice it myself in my clothes etc

Thanks fiesty. I needed to stay the same or hopefully lose a couple of lbs. My mind just can't seem to get a handle on my body - lol! I have gained a few but I feel like it looks like 10 anyway.

Hey Goofy!

I really can't give much feedback. It's been a long time since the Lithium trial for me, and it didn't last very long.

I just wanted to pop in with a big hello.

I can, however, relate to the weight gain concern. My pdoc (new one) wants to add anafranil a little down the road and I'm wary. Seems that any med with the potential for weight gain does it to me. (not to mention the libido ect. effects --groan). I once gained 30 lbs in 2 months. Can't remember which one. Maybe my brain is just getting fried from these things. Maybe I'm just getting old. :)

Hi Loopy! Glad to see you are still hanging around. Hope your new meds won't have any neg s/e. I AM getting pretty disgusted with mine. Life goes on...

Don't know if there's any relationship between these two events, but I dropped a few pounds (5-10) at the same time that I cut Lithium out of my drug regimen. I did a slow overlap/transition to Lamictal, and I didn't feel like I missed anything when I dropped Lithium.

Just sharing my own experience. Lots of other factors may have contributed to the weight loss, but I have been on Lithium before and struggled with a higher weight setpoint during those times.

That's interesting Zbaby. I am on a combo of lamictal and lithium. I will be anxious to see what happens when I can lower or drop something. Of course, my dh is completely happy with the combo I have now. I am finally "normal".

I just wanted to speak up from a weight loss perspective!

My husband is bi-polar and when he started lithium he lost over 50 lbs. He is a binge eater, and once his mood stabilized (from the lithium) he was better able to control his binging, hence the weight loss.

So, meds can cause you to gain or lose weight, it all depends on the person. Good luck.

Thanks analog. When I first started the lith, I too quit binge eating and learned to eat only when hungry (something that has always been hard for me). I don't know what happened but it seemed to change back, maybe with a dose increase, who knows. oh well such is life
