Please name your diagnosis and predominant mood.
If the best things in life are free, which ones pick you up when you're down?
Though money can't buy happiness, what pick me ups are you willing to pay for? [barring drugs of any kind]

BP 2 / Depressive
A laugh and/or smile from my toddler son, a funny episode of The Daily Show w/ Jon Stewart, cooking a good, labor-intensive meal, snuggling with my DH and phone calls from friends who "get" me
A cheap and cheerful dinner out, a good Ben Stiller comedy, new makeup, a good book, and shopping for a loved one, sometimes just for the heck of it

Type I Bipolar
sorry to say that nothing would pick me up when I was depressed except time and/or meds.

(former) Type II angry/suicidal/depressive
'quality time' with my kids still does it for me ~ to see a child's smile for their daddy...
'quality time' with my Carol ~ having 'unconditional love' helps like ANY drug (legal or not)
Interesting thread ~ long may it continue...

Thank you for the replies, everyone. It sounds like love is the drug and filling the belly with good food (esp. if someone else does the dishes) is a close 2nd.
GA2 - Quality outdoor time alone does it for me, too. Music is a great mood influencer, too.
R6:11 - Are you able to treat yourself well at all when you're down? I know you've got the more intense BPI, so it probably feels impossible. Just to get yourself out alone in the sun might be helpful. Sunlight might life your mood up, if only just a little. But I know this is all meaningless to you if you're down right now. When my p-doc suggested I pick up a hobby when I was depressed, I wanted to throw my hands up in the air because it all sounded like too much trouble. Know what I mean? Best to pick up these things when you're feeling closer to normal, then try and remember to do them when you're not doing so well.

Oh, Hedge, we knew you weren't being naughty with those words. It's the knowing someone cares and accepts you no matter what -- that awareness picks me up, too. And if they can make you laugh, all the better!

What brings me up? If i am not in a severe low..My kids, talking to them, hearing their voice. Talking with friends who understand me.. and are willing to listen to anything i have to say with a open heart and no negative talk back.
If i am in a severe low..you know that black pit...nothing can help that, just time..trying to remind myself that it "will pass"

kbatten, that's what I was trying to say... That for me a depression or down caused by the Bipolar (chemical imbalance) wasn't something I could "jolly" myself out of. Time, meds.
Z, thanks, but I haven't had a depression since 1984 when I was stabilized on lithium!!
(other than the normal kind like after my dad died)

Thank goodness, R6:11 and Kbatten - when you explain it like that, I know what you mean. Glad to hear that lithium does work out well for some people - like R6:11 and JustDave4N. Sorry if I wasn't clear -- by down I did not mean clinically depressed.

BP2 / Depressive
Different things really. In the base case accomplishing something useful lightens my mood, I start thinking I have the potential to be worth it again. (like this past saturday, I woke up before 2pm and put food in my fridge! I also ran errands. I mean the 5 hours worth of errand running not the going to the store to get the bare essentials so I can hurry up back home to go back to bed) Being with friends is also a mood lifter, but usually my deflates again once I'm alone. A friend of mine also suggests to me "feel good anime" to watch and that gets me percolating pretty good. (I guess that's the one I'm willing to pay for) But I think the most definitive thing to pick me up when I'm down is becoming MANIC!! :D
