Hi.
I don't have a child with ADD or ADHD. My son is 25, actually, and back then, ADD was just making "news". They used to call it "hyperactive".
I was watching a news program with Dr. Frank Lawlis on it where he was dicussing his book: The ADD Answer . Dr. Lawlis seemed to have a very "wholistic" approach to treating ADD in children. He spoke about treating the whole family and discussed specific "tools" and treatment methods that help your children learn to work with their condition.
He talked about his own "disorder" when he was young and how misunderstood he was and how misunderstood today's children are, still. He says that once the family and the child learn to work with the disorder, the child can become "whole" and not be treated as though they are "sick".
He also believes that children with ADD and ADHD are over medicated. He also stated that medication DOES work when given properly, but not long term.
Even though I never had to face the extreme difficulty and stress that it takes to raise a child with ADD, I DO believe that our children today are given this "label" and that this "label" can become the child, removing any individuality from the child themself. They aren't known as "Jimmy" or "Jane", but as "Jimmy with ADD", or "Jane with ADHD".
I just thought I'd post here and suggest that maybe those of you who have children who are struggling with this condition, and for those of you who have become frustrated with doctors and medications, so you can maybe take a look at his book. Find some excerpts from his book and just read them, see what you think. I have read some parts of his book (excerpts) and found his methods promising. I would read his book if I had a child suffering with ADD and ADHD. I know how guilty a child can feel when he/she is "labeled" with this condition. As well as how guilty and frustrated parents can become, because all they want is to help their child and to live a "normal" life.
I attemted to post parts of his text, (paraphrased of course) but the post would have taken up too much space, so I thought I'd just post the doctor's name and the title of his book so that you all can learn about him yourself if you choose.
Again, his name is Dr. Frank Lawlis, and the book is titled: The ADD Answer .
I hope that this post opens a door for some of you and God bless you all and your children.
