From what I've seen, he's doing really well (as are many persons who are HIV +). I don't know what meds he's on, his T-cell count or his viral load. For obvious reasons, these are confidential. But, I think we need not go focus on the numbers and see how he seems to be doing, how functional he is, and how successful he's become in overcoming the viscitudes of this illness. chris

I think it's just an example that if you have the means to treatment, and great doctors, you can most certainly live a life like anyone else. The problem lies in third world countries, and even on some of our streets where people do not get access to these things, and I think that this continues the misconception of earlier HIV/AID fears, although this is the fault of no one.(some say our system, but i'm going to try and keep politics out of discussion).

i agree. not sure how long he's done the treatment, but he doesn't appear to be experiecing the wasting or some of the other potential side effects from treatment, and of course, that's not to say that he's not.

There are a lot of things we don't know. For example, he was determined to be HIV+ in 1991. At that point in time, it appears as though he was tested not because he was experience any symptoms, but for insurance purposes. Given that his T-cell count was probably high at the time, and that his viral load is probably undetectable, then it is also true, given the course of treatment availabilities, that Magic Johnson will live a long and healthy life, despite what we thought would happen 15 yrs ago. chris

and not to downplay the virus at all but i was having a discussion with someone the other day about it. i explained that most of what 'most' people know about the virus is still from the scare we had from it around 25 years ago or so. a lots changed; we know so much more about it, how it's transmitted and so forth. you could call this a bit premature, but at the rate we're going in medical science, it's possible to see a cure maybe in the next decade.

Magic Johnson doesnt have any wasting because he most likely takes Human Growth Hormone, in combination with a super nutritional plan made up by his nutritionist, he worksout, and His med regimen. I can tell he uses Human growth hormone from his pronounced facial muscles, Ive heard that some medical research has also said that Growth hormone boosts the immune system, but it is rather expensive to buy Hormone so I guess that is where being rich pays off. Most of the articals about cures Ive read have been rather pessimistic about curing the actual virus. However that doesnt mean that there wont be a breakthrough. On the other hand long before a cure is found, there will be a therapudic vaccine, HIV infected individuals will be injected once or twice a year with this vaccine and it will turn them essentially into long term nonprogessers for about a year or so until there next shot, some success has been met in trials done in brazil but, not everyone injected had a positive responce. This would essentially turn this diease into a chronic but not fatal one. As for a preventative/cure vaccine, we are probably way off from that, by at least another 25 years.
